Then why is Asian?

I never said it was, quite to the contrary. I find this all to be incredibly silly.

My understanding of the issue is that oriental refers to objects and things, Asian refers to people. Using oriental to describe a person is demeaning and was historically a racist thing to say.

That's also my sort of understanding of it. But one does have to ask, what exactly makes this salad 'Asian'? Which I think the OP link was asking in a roundabout way, regardless of if I agree with the outcry or not. There are so many amazing dishes in Asian cuisine and the best we can do is drop some oranges on some wilted lettuce and dub it 'Asian'? Meh.. don't mind me I've been binge watching Samuari Gourmet and man is that show amazing. Learned about so many amazing foodstuffs with a sweet story to boot.

As stated earlier in this thread, Oriental literally means from the East, so it could apply to anything (objects or people) that come from the East based on the observer's perspective.  I don't see a lot of derogatory meaning there, but it is an outdated word as from everyone's perspective it could literally mean anyone or anything with origins East of their vantage point.  People in California could refer to anyone or anything that comes from New York as Oriental.

I wonder how long it will be before MDL  becomes outdated and  THE LEFT finds it offensive?  I just asked my middle of the road Asian wife if her or any of her , friends found that offensive. She thought it was a silly thing, and said of course not.

I suspect it is more white uber offended leftist in a rush to prove how enlightened and hip they are.

I find the term redneck and southern fried very offensive.

Yeah. I can't stand pretty much any of them. But then again, despite being an extrovert, I mostly find myself hating people in general nowadays.
