I'm not sure if this is true or not, but I find it funny either way.

New York Times Says McDonald's 'Asian Salad' Is Racist

"A winky, jokey name"

April 28, 2017

McDonald's Value Menu may not be the most sophisticated culinary offering in America. But that is not the reason for the New York Times recent hit-piece on the golden arches. More than just a vendor of tasteless food, McDonald's also apparently promotes racism with its new "Asian Salad."

Why Is Asian Salad Still on the Menu?" asked Bonnie Tsui, saying that "something created in the name of Asians by non-Asians [and] has become a touchstone for non-Asians."

Tsui described having seen the option during her visit at a San Francisco location, sparking her ire.

"I thought about its grand imprecision, which irritated me as a Chinese-American. And I wondered, who cooked up this thing," she recalled. "I was reasonably sure it wasn't anyone Asian."

Even though Greeks and Italians have the same treatment in American culinary cuizine – Dominos does not serve authentic pizza – Tsui still feels the Asians have been targeted by a racist patriarch somewhere.

"And yet the Asian salad is often the one that comes with a winky, jokey name: Oriental Chop Chop. Mr. Mao's. Secret Asian Man," she argued.

"Am I taking this too seriously?" Tsui asked, and then took herself even more seriously as she then denounced  "casual racism of the Asian salad" treats Asians as too exotic.

"This use of ‘Oriental' and ‘Asian' is rooted in the wide-ranging, ‘all look same' stereotypes of Asian culture that most people don't really perceive as being racist. It creates a kind of blind spot," she concludes.

This marks the second time in under a month an SJW has targeted the Big Mac distributor for racism towards Asians. In fact, just a few weeks ago, a writer at Inverse argued the chain should eschew ever bringing back their szechuan sauce, because it simplifies Chinese culture into a Chicken McNugget.

Hope that writer comes to Calgary where they still call Asian "Oriental", guaranteed trigger for the sensitive types.

I've never understood the racist connection with the word "Oriental".

You'd have to ask the left, although the left living here have known their cries of racism will result in being laughed out of the building especially with a huge chunk of this city devoted to Asian cultures. Hell, even Asian markets here call themselves Oriental. When my mother and aunt visited from California they were pissing and moaning about this non stop.

Hmmm...

President Barack Obama has signed legislation that will make the words "Negro" and "Oriental" things of the past, striking the racially-charged terms from federal law.

In a rare instance of bipartisan cooperation, the measure passed easily through Republican-controlled House and received unanimous support in the Senate, The Hill reports.

"The term 'Oriental' has no place in federal law and at long last this insulting and outdated term will be gone for good," Representative Grace Meng, a Democrat from New York, said in a statement.

The law targets two anti-discrimination areas of US law that use antiquated language to describe racial or ethnic groups.

Until now, one section of the Department of Energy Organization Act referred to a "Negro, Puerto Rican, American Indian, Eskimo, Oriental, or Aleut or is a Spanish speaking individual or Spanish descent." Similar language was used in a 1976 Public Works Act.

After New York banned state documents from using the term "Oriental" in 2009, following similar action by lawmakers in Washington state, San Francisco Chronicle columnist Jeff Yang told NPR that the word is loaded with cultural baggage.

"It's a term which you can't think of without having that sort of the smell of incense and the sound of a gong kind of in your head," Yang said. "Orient basically translates into East... you know, kind of contextually thinking about what... the East means, that only applies in a flat world."

Frank H. Wu, a law professor at Howard University and the author of Yellow: Race in America Beyond Black and White, told the New York Times in 2009 that, while the term isn't inherently negative, it's antiquated and "conjures up an era."

"It's associated with a time period when Asians had a subordinate status," Wu said, adding that the term was evocative of "exoticism and with old stereotypes of geisha girls and emasculated men."

and don't get me started on "Japanese" restaurants in NYC, with the menu a mixture of Korean, Thai and Japanese food. The rice isn't Japanese ...it's awful!!!!

Hey, did you see McDonalds "frork".. Now that's a laugh!!!

mfw "East" is racist and indicative of "flat world" ideology even when people use the term without any racist intentions. Ignores the very concept of language and conveyance of intent being through the speaker rather than the interpreter.

I swear the left will find anything to get upset about.

Which does not equate to racism. It gets old watching people twist things to re-write history to fit their narrative. There is nothing inherently racist about the word Oriental.

You'd have to ask the left,

You realize you could save a whole lot of typing time if you just post the things you don't think the left is responsible for.
