Traveling West and Amtrak

Good evening everyone.

Chris and I are planning our honeymoon for Sept. We have decided to fly to Denver and start there. I am looking for suggestions of MUST SEE places.

We hope to end up at some point in Wyoming and doing an over night rafting trip down the Snake River.

Where should we go? What should we see? Is Sept a good month?

Also: I was looking at Amtrak today just cause I was curious. Has anyone ever traveled on Amtrak. We'd consider it for sake of seeing the country side...it seems pricey but then again so is renting a car for two weeks. So all in all just looking for advice!

Anyone have any?

no idea...but it sounds awesome!!!

I have travelled Amtrak, but only between major cities...ie DC and NYC, or DC and Philly and it was great but for Loooooong distances I just don't know...it's no European system that's for sure.

Finally finished with immigration in 2012!

I know..we are really excited. There is just so much to see. The more research I do the more time I need. I don't think we can have a 2 month honeymoon (nor can we afford it)

I wanna see it all.

September is a GREAT time to go -- most of the summer crowds are gone and the weasther's still nice. I went to Yellowstone (which I guess you will visit in Wyoming) in September and it was perfect -- and we saw 3 bears!

I LOVE the American West - to me one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited in the world.

I think you might want to consider a car -- there are so many places to go, many tucked away off the beaten path and I think the car will really be the best way. And stay off the interstate.

My big recommendation is Southern Utah -- you won't be able to take the train there, but there are more national parks there than I think anywhere else in the country. Bryce is possibly the most mindblowing place I have ever been - to me, far more interesting than the Grand Canyon. Also Zion is nearby, Moab, the Grand Staircase, Needles, Arches and Dixie National Forest. Really, if you like the outdoors and fantastic landscape, you couldn't wrong by visiting.

Here's my suggested list:

Traveling by train...hmmm..never done it, and unlike most of the rest of the world, it's not so popular here.. so..

Drive - rent a car...or BETTER YET - rent an RV.. can take your time, pull over, feel more comfortable...

So the List:

(In no particular order except what comes to mind)

  • Bryce Canyon - and Monument Valley (Utah) must see - unbelievable
  • Grand Canyon - Arizona - might jump up and down on that new sky-walk too ;)
  • Yellow Stone
  • Las Vegas
  • Yosemite Natl.Park (California)
  • Mount Rushmore (South Dakota)
  • San Francisco (golden gate, etc)
  • Hollywood/Malibu/Beverly Hills(Optional)
  • San Diego Zoo (and all else) (Optional)

That's a long list I suppose..but if you got the time.. ;)

Don't forget to see the worlds largest ball of twine.

Awesome guys!

We are most definatly renting a car.

But we were thinking of venturing off possibly by train! The idea popped into my head today.

We will fly to Denver...meet up with some friends then off on our own.

Strike...we will see that ball of twine...just for you.

Hopefully I can do you a video of some electronic dj cat bouncing around it in a daze. It will be great!

We thought about the new Skywalk thingy..honestly Chris says no. He will look at it from a distance. He is not a heights man. Even Piers do his head in! (yeah he'll love that I am sharing his fears)

Robinlake...I did just get told this afternoon that Utah was incredible. Not a far venture from Denver either!!

OH THE CHOICES!

If you plan visit more than one national park you should get an eagle pass - excellent value for money.

Colorado is beautiful, too! Don't just use it as a jumping off point to other places. I've been living there on and off for the past two years. It's pretty awesome, especially in the fall.

We took Amtrak from St. Louis to Chicago, a 6 hour trip, and I hated it. Way too long to just sit there. Not much to look at as the train speeds by. And, if you get stuck near anyone who talks constantly, God help you.

I would never take it again.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

I rode the Amtrak from San Diego to Portland. back Sept 9-10 2001. I look forward to when i do it again. If I do train especially for any time... a sleeper is a must... best part it included all the meals.. and might I add.. they were incredible. Quiche or omlet or belgium waffles.. for breakfast.. lunch assortment of salads of choice salmon or simply sandwich.. you know.. nice restraunt lunch menu... Dinner.. just as supurb...

It was the best money spent especially when it included the meals. and wine tasting and snacks.. ..

View was fantastic as well...

Just a side note.. .. was really interesting .. we actually were stopped somewhere north of SF.. for about 3 hours.. in the night.. while some authorities searched the train... hmmmm.. always was on my mind.. given the next morning was 9-11..

sharing isn't sharing unless the other person is included
