I just visited in early September and I booked another trip for December.  It feels so good to be with them and hurts more each time I leave.  I am just hoping for one more trip after December.  That one is to bring them home.

I hear you... haven't seen my love in person (no, Skype doesn't count) in over a year now... it's so hard to predict if and when all of this stuff will happen and I've been weighing the cost of going to see her with the possibility that I might have to go again after another month to bring her here... Tentatively, I've planned a trip for early December; it's already been way too long and hearts were not meant to feel this way.

Indeed.  This was taking too long and I couldn't go much longer without feeling her touch.  I have been very lucky with airfares as I have never paid more than $525 roundtrip.  December will be my 4th visit this year.  It sounds like a lot but it feels like I have never visited.  I can't wait to be with her everyday.

For some reason flights from Chicago are cheap!  A couple people here found that flying to Chicago then then to Asia have them hundreds of dollars!!!  One flew from San Francisco and left for Manila out of Chicago for $200 less than the flight from San Francisco to Manila!

The number of visits is never enough... unfortunately, I flew economy on my very first trip and my body told me never to do that again for a 15 hour leg so, I have to fly premium economy which is always more expensive.  Totally worth it, though, to see her of course!  :)

My costs were premium economy too.  It is cheaper to book economy on say, Expedia,  and upgrade the seat selection with the airline directly.  In fact, on the last trip the RT cost for premium economy was $1200.  The economy was $325.  I bought economy and upgraded the long flights for $100 each.  So $525 for premium economy on the 14 hour flights and I got lucky with the 3 hour flights and ended on an aisle with no one sitting next to me!!!

Wow... really?  I'd never thought about upgrading at the airport... always afraid that there wouldn't be any of those seats available, I guess...

Actually, you can update online as soon as you get the booking confirmation number.  I do it right after I get the confirmation from Expedia.  Go online and make your seat choice.

I'll definitely check it out, thanks.  I usually fly Cathay Pacific to Bangok... had a terrible flight once with China Southern; I'm not sure that all the airlines play the same upgrade game but, if it's Expedia making the upgrade, maybe they have no choice...?

I'm not sure if it is a game.  It seems like booking economy plus straight is more expensive than booking economy and upgrading seats after the tickets are purchased.  I never questioned it and that is what I did for all my flights this year.  In December I'm traveling with a friend who works at United.  I will be on his "buddy pass".  We will still pay for Hong Kong to Manila RT but we have a shot at business or first class for the long flights!

Nice!  I only flew business once; was bumped up for the 3-hour (short) leg but it sure was great!  :)  Just to confirm, you do the upgrading through Expedia and not the airline?

No.  I purchase through Expedia and upgrade from the airline itself.
