This is very similar to the advice from CBP agents about visiting the Mexican border cities:  stay in the tourist (or main business) areas during daylight hours, and keep healthily alert and aware of your surroundings.

Haha, he's had a long time to get used to it, but most of the time now he works until late at night so that makes me more nervous worrying about him getting home safely. There are days we'll hear shots and we'll play a game of trying to determine what it is and where it's coming from. Sometimes it can be a little too much for him, and people don't realize.. it's just not something you encounter where he came from.

We don't live in a big city though. That's the problem, you wouldn't expect the level of crime that goes on here in a tiny town... but it does. There really are no sidewalks to walk on around here at night nor street lights either - so if we go anywhere at night it's via car and likely to the next state where it's safer. There are no good areas here. In Baltimore you had a clear understanding of what the good and bad areas were.
