Hi,

Is it always necessary to hire a lawyer when we immigrate to Canada? This was a question from my cousin. He was enquiring whether to stick with the services of a paralegal or a  consultant. What is your opinion on this?

He is a businessman in the US. And he would like to migrate to Canada in search of more business opportunities.

1.What all documents should he submit at the time of immigration?

2.How long does it take to process a file?

Waiting to know your replies. And hope to send him the answers as early as possible. I will approach a Canadian Immigration lawyer only after receiving your reply. Each of the replies and suggestions will be highly appreciated.

 Thanks in advance

Paralegals in Canada (specifically Ontario) are different from other paralegals in that they are regulated and can advocate similar to a lawyer (just a smaller scope.)

I maintain my paralegal license in Ontario (though obviously not practicing) and a paralegal is definitely a great choice for immigration matters, though if there are any unusual or complex matters in the case, it may have to be overseen by a lawyer, but even then, all lawyers I've known and worked for have paralegals or law clerks doing everything and then they just sign off.

Depending where he is from/ going to, send me a message and I can give you a few names of folks I know who practice in that area.

Definitely use a Lawyer.

I agree. It appears your cousin is in need of guidance on how Canadian immigration works.

As a note this is a US immigration website not a Canadian one.  Try www.roadtocanada.com instead.  Lawyers do seem to help with Canadian immigration.
