After Babylon 5 ended and the spin-offs didn't takeoff (I blame the Superbowl, it was stupid trying to pit a new tv show against the Superbowl :girlwerewolf2xn::cry::ranting:) I haven't been watching much TV.

I heard some rumor about a few straight to DVD stand alone stories in the B5 universe. I think I'll look into that again right now.

Some of the main actors from the original series have died :(

BT

one of the actresses from B5 has a recurring role on LOST .......

Wow, old post but I'm going to reply and show my saddo knowledge. The woman who plays Rousseau in Lost was Ambassador Delenn (Mira Furlan). I watched B5 for a few years but admit that in the last couple of series I lost interest. It went a bit barmy, imo.

I've started rewatching Blake's 7.

Atrocious production values, but the scripts are pretty compelling.

Watch out for the wobbly sets!

B5 was weird - when it was good the main story was some of the best SF ever filmed for TV. In particular, the first 2 episodes of season 4 were fantastic - considering the production limitations and studio interference. I like it a lot - but it was never as good as it could have been because they had to truncate the rest of the story into season 4 because Warner's originally pulled the plug on season 5.

I still like it a lot - but I won't go near the 5th season - that really was toilet, as are all of the recent spin-offs. The original TV movies are ok - the only one worth watching is In the Beginning. IMO.

There's some episodes on youtube that I've been watching. Including one that was very close to an old Star Trek episode - where Spock and Scotty get stuck in a shuttle that can't break orbit. Of course in Star Trek it would have never crossed Spock's mind to toss Scotty out of the nearby airlock and lighten the load - which is pretty much what happens in the B7 story.

It's a very morally ambigous show - that and the title character essentially becomes Bin Laden in space.

It would be interesting if they brought the show back... I like subversive stories.

And not forgetting that Avon was just about the best Sci-Fi character ever written. Played brilliantly by Paul Darrow.

Yeah he was pretty good with the sardonic witticisms - but the scriptwriters should really have avoided having him do any acting that required him to "emote". He really wasn't good at that.

Absolutely.

He was also terribly typecast afterwards.

I can imagine. He was involved with a production company around 2000 to bring the series back (with him as Avon) but it fell through because of creative differences. I think the rights are now owned by some BBC writers who bought them from Terry Nation's estate. They've done some audioplays - retreads of the original series basically.

I didn't mind the Abba-esque clothes, wobbly sets and ropey spaceship effects (which were basically the same techniques used in Red Dwarf a few years later) - the show takes itself so seriously in the scripts that you forget about that stuff after a while. The first episode - The Way Back - is still extremely effective and was in many ways ahead of its time, what with the Federation putting Blake on trial on trumped up charges of child abuse.

Hopefully seeing as the Beeb is doing pretty well with Dr. Who and Torchwood they'll think about bringing it back.
