Passport needed when you hold a green card?

Incase anyone is still following this, I had to go to Canada on Sunday bc my brother had a medical emergency (he's okay and on the mend), and when I came back into the US (land border from ON to NY) I presented the border agent my passport and green card.  He handed me back my passport (without even opening it) and quickly glanced at my green card before handing that back to me.  He did NOT swipe either document on his computer or anything.  A couple questions about the "trip" and if I had anything to declare coming into the US and that was it and I was on my merry way.

That is not correct. Plenty of situations where you can fly and or travel without a passport.  Passport will save you time an questions when checking in, but still not an absolute requirements for all
