Traveling on Extension Letter?

Hello guys,

I returned back to the US yesterday on extension letter. My POE was Atlanta, Georgia.

I had no problem at all, NOTHING like that. it was very easy.

I want to emphasize that the CBP officer did not even look at my extension letter. He took from me just my passport and expired green card.

once again, the extension letter stayed at my hand, I tried to hand it over but he shook his head and did not even LOOK at the letter.

he just asked me where I was coming from and how long I stayed there. that was all.

Hi everyone,

I just did my biometrics yesterday. I know that I won't hear anything before 8 months, so I 've already started making travel plans. I have some questions:

1 - Is it really safe traveling with the extension letter? Do I need anything else besides my passport, expired green card(it will be expired soon), and the extension letter?

2- How do we check - in at the airport and get on the plane with an expired green card when we're coming back to the States? I mean do people who work at the check-in counter know about the extension letter?

Thank you.

1- it is safe and easy as long as you have you expired green card and extension letter. I used the letter once so far and it went fine.

2- The staff of the airline is trained and should know about the extension letters. They usually ask their managers to double check and that's about it.

Don't worry too much, just don't lose your passport, expired green card and extension letter.

For peace of mind you can always carry a copy of this as well...the relevant info for the permanent residents traveling on the extension letter is on page 38. It's also worth mentioning that you have to travel using the original extension letter because it's watermarked...they don't accept copies.

I completely agree, but we found out that it is a good idea to keep copies with you as well.  When my wife first traveled on the extension letter, tha airline checkin at Beijing asked for a copy of the letter to keep and luckily my wife had the original with a couple of copies with her so she had no issues.  Just make sure you don’t accidentally give away the original if asked for a copy.

My post is just above your question.

If you read it that will answer your question.

In my case, when i returned back in USA with expired green card, they did not even look at my extension letter. They asked for passport and expired green card only

Hey guys, I will be filing my ROC in December, just want to ask some of you for opinions.

My passport will be expiring in Oct 2018, I'm worried that I might have less than 6 months when the white extension letter/stamp comes. I'm not sure when USCIS going to send that to me.

Here's the question, my embassy requires me to visit the embassy in person for passport renewal which is not available in my State, I have to travel to other States, as you guys know, December (by the time the passport is ready if I renew it now) air tickets and hotels are SUPER SUPER DUPER expensive and I want to save costs.

Should I renew my passport now and pay a load of money for my trip to embassy, or should I wait till USCIS issues the extension letter, which we do not know when and renew my passport? (it takes 6-8 weeks to renew passport)

I intend to travel back home next year.

During the ROC process, other than having the stamp, does USCIS requires to provide us to submit original passport?

Thanks in advance guys!

I have a huge favor to you guys :)

why everybody is making mountain out of a moll hill? dont make it a big deal.

-Do you have an expired green card?  -Yes

-Do you have extension letter?  -Yes

So it means you can legally travel and no one is going to deprive you from the right of entering back the USA

Just relax, have your expired green card, extension letter, passport and that is all you need to legally travel

So if. We are in no need of the stamp when my.  Roc letter expires.  Do I need it ??

If your extension letter expires, you will need the stamp to travel outside the US (or more accurately to be allowed back into the US after traveling).  If you have no travel plans, then you may not need it.  However, it would likely also make life easier if you had to renew a driver's license or in the event that you had to produce documentation for any reason - new job, being stopped for a minor driving offense etc.  I just got the stamp last week as my extension letter had expired.  Completely painless process at your local USCIS office - allow about an hour including waiting time.  But no need for huge amounts of backup documentation etc.  Worth doing IMHO - if you had an emergency with family abroad and had to travel at short notice, it would be one less thing to cause stress at the time.

What about the couples that are buying their first home together, to be told no by the mortgage company because they won't accept an extension letter and demand a 10yr green card?

What about the people who are applying for a dream new job and despite seeing the extension letter, the employer won't accept an expired green card?

What about the people that get delayed at foreign airports because the airline check-in staff are not familiar with the extension letter and miss their flight and connecting flight?

What about the people that needlessly speed hours in secondary immigration inspection, to be finally given a grunt and told to go on their way?

What about the people that have to travel for hours and hours to get an I-551 extension stamp in their passport, only to be told they have arrived a week too early?

What about the people that spend hours in the DMV and then get turned away because that office is unfamiliar with the extension letter?

What about the people who's naturalization applications are delayed because USCIS haven't adjudicated their ROC applications in a timely manner?

What about expecting a reasonable and somewhat timely service from USCIS given the fact that you've paid $680 in fees?

You're right. It's certainly not a mountain of problems, but it's certainly not a molehill either.
