Thank you for pointing this out! I am planning to travel to Canada (by Land though). Hopefully they will let me in with only my Indonesian Passport, expired GC and extension letter. I checked in their website, I do not need obtain visa if I have proof of US residency..

I travelled by air in December, there was no problem. My passport also required visa or eTA for Canada, but I didn't have to apply for it because of GC and extension letter.

Hi All,

How long does it take to get the extension letter from the date we file our ROC? I have a trip planned out of the country this August and I will be filing within a week and Hoping I have time.

Thanks!

You should have a letter within a few weeks of filing (6 weeks is a max usually).

Hi all,

Anyone's expired green card got taken away from the USCIS office when you go and get the extension stamp on your passport?

I am seeing people here still have their expired green card with them when traveling. When my wife was at the USCIS that was the first thing they took from her (Expired Green Card)

Other question I have is that do you guys get nervous while your traveling and you interview letter shows up and miss the appointment?? We do want to travel but we just had a baby and both of our families are from different countries so we will need to travel for a little longer (need to travel two countries with a baby) so I'm guessing the trip will be more than 4 weeks.

Any info would be appreciated!

Thank you all

It's best not to miss it. You can sign up for USPS Informed Delivery. That way you would know in advance if the letter is coming. And decide whether you want to miss the appointment or come back for it (recommended)

Hey everyone,

Might be traveling to Italy soon and was wondering if anyone had any issues with airlines coming back to NY. Applied for N-400 but still have pending I-751 with new 48 months extension. The two options I’m considering are Delta or American Airlines.

Travelled last year and had no issues with JetBlue but that’s not one of the options I’m finding.

If anyone has travelled with those two airlines from Europe without any problems, would appreciate your feedback. Thanks

We have not traveled with any of those airlines but you shouldn't have a single issue. They're old big airlines that must be familiar with this kind of document.

We traveled with a brand new airline a few months ago and the lady at the counter was knowledgeable and the process was amazingly quick- and we always arrive way earlier than we should just in case there is some sort of problem-.

As a side note, we have already traveled with the 18 month and 24 month extension; can't wait to travel with our brand new 48 month one! 😆

Might I suggest a personalized binder to keep your valuable collection of....extension letters?

Recently came back from a trip to Europe.

On the way back, departure was uneventful, as United airline agent was nice and knowledgable. Arrival at SFO wasn't as smooth as in September 2022. The GE kiosks asked to scan docs this time. This was a rollback from purely facial recognition I've experienced in September 2022. The system didn't like the expired GC so had to see the CBP briefly and show extension letter.

Two more travel experiences

Flew Virgin Airlines from Orlando to London Heathrow and then back to Orlando from London at the end of January. No problems whatsoever. Never even asked to see the extension letter upon return to the USA.

Flew from Orlando to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and then back to Orlando at the beginning of March. Again, no problems. This time I was asked for my extension letter upon arrival back to Orlando, but they took one look at it and we were good to go.

In all, have been back and forth to Canada about 5 times, gone on a cruise to the Bahamas, a trip to London, and a trip to the Domician Republic on my extension letter and it has gone very smoothly each time. The biggest holdup was the cruise to the Bahamas because the Royal Caribbean employee needed a manager to sign off on it on their computer.

GE procedures are so random... I usually fly into IAH and sometimes I need to talk to someone, other times I just print the GE receipt and hand it to someone and I am good to go. Arrived at JFK yesterday and printed GE receipt was enough. My GC expires in May 2023 but GE doesn't expire before Dec 2026. I just double checked and was surprised that GE is not dependent on GC. Hope they won't change that lol
