It doesn't matter - stamp or a 'combo".

A Green card, I-551stamp, a "combo" of an Ext Letter+an expired green card - they all represent Form I-551. And an expiration of one of those doesn't mean your status got expired - in the system you still are seen as a LPR, regardless what Form of     I-551 you present at the border.

So,  no worries - you will be fine. Besides, I wouldn't take any risk by mailing your new green card abroad. No way.

Enjoy your trip and safe travel!

Thank you so much!!! Have a nice day 😃

Oh. I meant at the airport.

I was just wondering if its necessary to have the i551 stamp or only with the letter I won't have no problems at Customs.

Airlines are free to deny boarding to anyone.  I don’t know that I’ve seen a case of an airline denying boarding of an LPR with an extension letter but I have seen one denying boarding of an LPR with an endorsed immigration visa.

Extension letter is fine. USCIS will not give you a stamp if your letter is not expired. I traveled to China and Chile with the extension letter and I didn't have any problems.

Hello Ksenia, did you fly from I-551 from Ukraine? Have you had any problems with boarding the plane? I have -I551 in my passport, but I'm afraid to fly home.

yes, I did - not a problem, at all. They  (seems like) are well aware what the stamp stands for, as well as a "combo" of expired green card +ext.Letter.

No worries - you will be just fine :)

If you decide to go home - have a safe trip and enjoy your time

Hello, my wife travelled today from Karachi to Houston by Qatar Airways with Expired GC and the Extension letter without any problem , we emailed Qatar Customer service before leaving USA and they were aware of all and confirmed that she will face no trouble at KHI and Doha. Allhamdullilah all is well beside thunderstorm here in Houston and flight is landed at near by Austin Airport, still waiting for updates,.

Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Turkish, KLM/Delta/Air France  - they are all well informed about all forms of I-551.
