Hi! Thanks for your help last night. I found it already. So, does extension letter will be good for travelling without my GC?

You're welcome! No, you will need to travel with the Green Card AND the extension letter. This is because the extension letter extends your resident status for one year from the date of the expiry shown on your actual card, so you'll need to show both when traveling.

Even if the GC is expired?

Yes. Showing a letter that extends your status for one year from the expiry date on the card does no good if the person examining your extension letter can't also see the card itself. You must have both.

Any experience out there entering the US on expired green card + extension letter after receiving I-751 NOA2?

We're away in Europe, scheduled to fly back in about a week. We received the I-751 NOA2 yesterday dated 8/15. There is language on the notice that's a little scary (see attachment). I suspect this is more for people whose non immigrant visas are getting canceled upon being granted permanent residency but thought I'd check here. Do we need to worry about this or can we just go in with expired green card + extension letter while the new green card is likely sitting in our mailbox at home?

They do care, as do most countries that require people residing in a country other than that of their citizenship.

From the UK visa application (page 12):

In the case of an expired green card during RoC, they'd want to see the green card and the extension letter demonstrating an additional year of validity.

Yes, we have the original "extension letter" aka NOA1 along with the expired 2y green card. We've traveled this way before. My question is specific to the case where the I-751 has just been approved, the new green card is being produced and mailed to us, but we've not yet received it. Is the expired green card + extension letter still valid for travel into the US in that case? In particular, will is work as it did prior to the I-751 approval at the airline checkin counter in the foreign country?

If anyone has ever traveled back into the US within that (typically) short window of time, I'd love to hear about their experience. The I-751 approval notice specifically states that we might run into difficulty.

I've contacted the USCIS desk at the US embassy to ask for clarification.

I came back from Europe on Friday. Not everything was very smooth. I was flying from Moscow to Helsinki and then to Chicago. In Moscow the airline agent had to ask her manager about my GC and NOA because she wasn't able to enter the GC expiration date. The manager reviewed the NOA and told the agent to enter my the expiration date one year ahead. Then in Helsinki, when I showed my boarding pass to the agent by the gate, he said to step aside ( there were also some other people form my flight form Moscow). The security officer came to us and said that we were chosen for random check. They made some closed stands by the gate. And each of us went there and they checked your bags. And then the security officer took me to the gate and said that everything was good. The airline agent checked something in the system and reprinted my boarding pass. And I don't know why, but he changed my seat to business class!! LOL! So finally, in Chicago the officer asked if my GC is expired. I said yes. He said I'm gonna send you to secondary so that they can verify the letter but dont worry. He asked where I work, took my fingerprints and photo and that's it. I went to a small room with another officer. I was there like for 2 minutes. And then he called my name and said I'm good to go!

Can you share how you navigated through immigration and customs? On our previous entry at JFK on the extension letter, we had to first go to the automated kiosks before we were sent to the long "X" line and when we finally got up to the front, the officer told my wife to go to the office in the back to be processed. It took a long time just to be told to go to the processing office and I wonder if we could just go straight there when we fly in again next week?
