Hi everyone, Need your help.

So i applied for my GC renew on May 2018. Yesterday was my interview with USCIS, not sure how long it will take to get a decision. But me and my wife have a travel planned On December 27th to Jan 16 out of the country.

My current extension letter expires in February 2020.

Can someone provide me some information like:

is it safe to travel after GC renew Interview while waiting for response?

Is it safe to travel when i will have only few weeks left for the extension letter?

what  things i need to do before travelling?

Thanks in advance.

I can only give my best guess. Firstly, i think that you should not have any problems traveling on the extension letter if need be. You could always get an appointment and a stamp in your passport, which is what I did. Traveled twice with it and had no issues at all. I also feel that there is a good chance of a decision being made quickly and before you travel end of December. If the card arrives in time is another question, but my approval letter arrived within 3 days of approval. Super quick. I just got it yesterday and may have to travel with it in December as well if the card does not arrive by then.

Good luck!! I hope you here from them soon.

Congratulations!!  I'm flying to Europe a few days before you leave. I'll keep my fingers crossed for both of us. I'm not too worried, but coming back with the physical GC is definitely easier and quicker 😀

Hi guys! I read most of this thread but unfortunately my situation is different.

I lost my GC in May. I then filed the I-90 and went to the immigration office where a nice officer stamped my passport with the temporary stamp I-551 which expires the same day my GC would - at the end of January. He told me that if he has to be honest, my application to replace the GC probably won’t be processed before I had to apply to lift the conditions so not to expect much. I filed the I-751 last month and recently got my 18 month extension letter.

My issue is: does the stamp in my passport count as an expired GC for the sake of traveling abroad? Or would I need a new stamp? I’m calling my local office soon as they don’t accept online made appointments anymore but was curious if someone has been in the same situation recently.

12/15/2017 Interview notice - interview is scheduled for January 19th! Holy #$%^ that's less than 3 months from PD!

01/16/2018 Combo card delivered

01/19/2018 Interview - recommended for approval

An Extension Letter without an actual green card is useless. So I believe you'd need another stamp once the "first " one gets expired.

Good luck!!!!!

Guys who traveled recently, did you have to show also the green card and extension letter AT THE BOARDING GATE? Not just during the check in?
thank you in advance for the answer.

No, they just want to see the ticket at the boarding gate

So, for clarity...

my wife traveled to Chile and left on Dec 17.  We received the noa that her conditions were lifted on Dec 19 and will be receiving her green card in 60 days.  The form says not to travel.

Since she's already out of the country, will she have issues re-entering?  She has an extension letter from December 2018 which was good for 18 months.  Is that all she needs to show when re-entering?

As long as she has  a "combo" of an expired green card + extension letter she will be fine, don't worry.

I was out of the  US when my ROC got approved and my 10 years green card arrived. Entered the country with I-551 stamp in my passport (an Extension Letter was already expired). No issues, at all.

We received our extension letter about 1.5 weeks after sending in the application.   It came so fast!!

I know its not technically the green card but can my wife travel back and forth to mexico without fear of going too frequently?  We usually go there for dinner or a show since we live so close.

Thanks

My friend here in Tucson is in a similar situation.  They go to Rocky Point and Nogales a lot since we live close to the border.  His wife takes her passport with the extension stamp in it plus the expired GC+extension letter and they have never had problems getting back into the country.

You seem to have painted yourself and your dependent son into a corner. At some point you have to decide what is more important for you, a 10-year GC for you and one for your son, or the travel. Keep in mind it is USCIS old worn-out system not yours, they are calling the shots, not you. You could try to contact the USCIS Customer Service Center and see if they can help.

Good luck on your immigration journey.

Thank you all for your concerns and  advices. We just got back from Nepal. Everything work out well.
