I've just learned here that once your I-751 is approved, and before you receive your GC, you need to have a special passport stamp to leave the country. I am leaving the country for 1 week and my mail is on hold with USPS right now. I have the extension letter and the expired GC with me. Some people that applied around the same time that I did (but different Service Centers) are receiving their approval letters.

Is there anything I can do to make USCIS wait until I get home to send me anything?

If you get the notice in case tracker do your best to get an infopass appointment.  If you can't it is no big deal as ling as the extension letter has not expired.   CBP may send you yo secondary to pull your file up.

I believe you'd need a Transportation Letter

"If your Green Card is stolen while outside the U.S.; please notify the police department in the jurisdiction in which your card was stolen to obtain a police report and contact your nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate to request a boarding foil (formerly known as a transportation letter). Please be aware that you may be required to complete the I-90 form: Application to Replace Permanent Resident and paying the fee at the time of your re-entry to the U.S. "

Yes, that’s what uscis said about lost green card, but it doesn’t say a word about expired GC with extension letter. I want to believe, it’s same procedure, but we know, how tricky can be bureaucracy..

Probably, good to send email to one of our embassies, with that question;)

You are dealing with CBP after arrival and CBP  DOES say a word about expired green card and extension letter.

https://www.cbp.gov/sites/default/files/assets/documents/2019-Mar/2019 Carrier Information Guide - ENGLISH.pdf

Pp.2, 29-30

So, no need to bother Embassy or anybody/anything else - as long as you have a "combo" of an expired green card+Extension letter OR the I-551 stamp in your passport (in case when the Letter gets expired), you are good to travel.

Ksenia, you’re totally misunderstood my question. Everyone know how to travel with expired gc and extension letter. Question is, did US embassies has a same procedure for lost expired gc, just like for non-expired gc, if  expired gc and extension letter are LOST ABROAD.

Sorry if I did . I don't do mornings well :)

In the USCIS link  the Form  I-551  is mentioned.  Not just a green card.

Only a LPR can get a Transportation Letter from the Embassy and stolen/ lost/expired  Form I-551 doesn't take one's LPR status away.

So, the procedure is the same regardless what got stolen /lost /expired - the combo or an actual green card or a passport with I-551 stamp on it.  They all represent the Form I-551.

Here is  more,  and  the Form I-551 is mentioned. Whatever form/combo of  the Form (sorry for tautology)  one has/had.

What about at check-in for the flight back to the US? Did the airline employees at the check-in counter raise questions about the expired GC and did they know that the extension letter extended GC validity by 1 year from the expiration date?

I'm traveling soon on expired GC with extension letter. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, it’s been some time so idk if you are still there but I’m traveling abroad in a week and I need to put my passport information on the airline website. But when i put the green card information, it tells me it’s expired (it is, I intend on using the extension letter to come back) and won’t let me continue, but I need to put my passport information before flying. Did you have this problem? Should I put that I don’t have a green card? Or put a fake expiration date?

The airline is not very helpful, they don’t want to risk telling me what to do and have only told me to check the countries regulations but I can’t find any information on my situation.

Thanks!

What expiration date are you entering? Should be  the Extension Letter expiration date   I've done this ,for Austrian Airline/Lufthansa Group and to apply for eTA to travel by air  to/through  Canada. Worked fine both times.

What airline are you flying with?...

Good, I didn’t think about putting the extension letter date lol I was putting the one in the green card. And I’m flying with Air France. Thank you!

There have been quite a few posts recently regarding traveling on an expired GC with the one year extension letter.

Page 38 of this document provides some reassurance:

https://www.cbp.gov/sites/default/files/documents/Carrier Information Guide- English.pdf

It also makes clear that the 12 month extension is from the card expiry date, not the receipt date of the I-797.

Hi,can you please re-post this link, i cannot access it

thank you

Did officer ask any questions or just let you in? What about airlines, accepted extension letter without questions? Thanks in advance for the answer.

I arrived at Oakland International Airport in California a couple of days ago. At port of entry, I was not able to use the customs machines because my green card is expired. So I had to write on the little blue customs form instead. The border agent only asked me two simple questions. He took my fingerprints on my right hand, took my picture, and let me through. Very easy.

Do you have Global Entry?
