Traveling on Extension Letter?

I arrived at Oakland International Airport in California a couple of days ago. At port of entry, I was not able to use the customs machines because my green card is expired. So I had to write on the little blue customs form instead. The border agent only asked me two simple questions. He took my fingerprints on my right hand, took my picture, and let me through. Very easy.

Hi everyone,

I need your help. I mailed 751 package to AZ on July 22 and then got the extension letter on July 29. Now I am waiting for Biometric appointment.

BUT I have a prepaid trip starting in 2 weeks. Should I travel without having done Biometric. My GC expires in 10 weeks time. I will be back to the U.S before my GC expires but I am still worried. Not sure what to do.

thank you all for your time

You can travel without doing your biometrics. I got my extension letter in April and I still haven't done my biometrics. I just got back from traveling abroad with no problems. Don't worry about it! :)

RandB, did you actually get a letter for your Biometrics appointment?

I assume that you should have received Biometrics appointment letter, if this is the case, you still have not done it. Do you just ignore it or why I don't really understand. Can we go to do Biometrics at any convenient time? hmmm

I didn't receive my biometrics letter yet. Many others that filed at the same time I did have not received theirs, either.

Once an ASC Notice (biometric ) received - you can not just ignore it. You have to show up for your biometric appointment OR  to re-schedule that (in the Notice it will be described how to do that).

Another option - you may try to do an early "walk-in' - in case if you have a trip scheduled, for example. But a Bimetric Notice is needed as well to so so. Also not every USCIS Office welcomes" early walk-ins - allot of people got it done successfully, some got denied.

Did anyone have a concern when travel abroad, what if your green card and extension letter will be lost, accidentally destroyed or stolen? Honestly, it bothers me a bit, because i like to have a plan for possible emergencies in foreign countries; but I didn’t find such information at uscis website.

Any thoughts?

No doubt, everyone, always should have copies of travel documents. Question is, will that help to get a strong document from US Embassy/Consulate for airline and/or passport control staff, to fly back home to USA. And  that’s very hard to say, so far.

I believe you'd need a Transportation Letter

"If your Green Card is stolen while outside the U.S.; please notify the police department in the jurisdiction in which your card was stolen to obtain a police report and contact your nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate to request a boarding foil (formerly known as a transportation letter). Please be aware that you may be required to complete the I-90 form: Application to Replace Permanent Resident and paying the fee at the time of your re-entry to the U.S. "

I've just learned here that once your I-751 is approved, and before you receive your GC, you need to have a special passport stamp to leave the country. I am leaving the country for 1 week and my mail is on hold with USPS right now. I have the extension letter and the expired GC with me. Some people that applied around the same time that I did (but different Service Centers) are receiving their approval letters.

Is there anything I can do to make USCIS wait until I get home to send me anything?
