Just curious: What happens if the extension letter itself expires? That's going to happen to me soon 😒. Can one still travel with expired green card and expired extension letter?

No, you would not be allowed to board a plane to the US or allowed entry into the US with both expired docs.

You have to get an i551 ADIT stamp in your passport. i551 stamps are generally issued about a month prior to extn letter expiration

I-751 journey

10/16/2017.......... ROC package mailed

10/18/2017.......... I-751 package received VSC

10/19/2017.......... I-797 NOA date

10/30/2017.......... Notice received in mail

10/30/2017.......... Check cashed

11/02/2017.......... Conditional GC expired

Thanks. So the temporary stamp in passport alone is sufficient?

Yes, CBP deems the i551 stamp sufficient to enter the US.

According to this link, you need to apply for a visa at a Mexican consulate.

Hi I’m kinda in the same situation but I’m going to the Bahamas. I only have expired gc and the extension letter. And my country is on their list who require Bahamas visa. Never been there with valid GC and I bought a ticket already. I just don’t know if they will accept my extension. Pls help! It’s frustrating! 😕

Hi,

I had this situation. So before I got on the plane, I went to my country embassy in the US and requested a note on my passport, stating the name on my passport was the same person as the name on my green card. This was my evidence.

Hope this helped.

Hi All,

Do we need to wait for the bio-metric appointment to apply for a schengen visa or would the NoA suffice?

NoA extends the validity of the green card by 18 mos, so that's what's required to demonstrate proof of US permanent residency.

Hi,

I've done that multiple times and never had any issue. But I always bring my marriage certificate as well in case any problem happens, so it is easy to show the name change.

Hi,

I have seen mixed experience form people on here but wanted to get recent experience from people who have travelled (especially to Peru). I will be traveling with Interjet to Lima, Peru for 2 weeks this month with a 5 hour lay over in Mexico City. I don't plan to leave the Mexico city airport. For both, Peru and Mexico City I have a visa waiver being permanent resident of the US and citizen of India. Has anyone had any trouble with airplanes not letting them board or with getting entry into LIma/Mexico/or back into the US? This will be my first time traveling on an extension letter.

Thank you in advance!

Hi,

I am planning to travel to Turkey in sept 2019 with my expired green card and extension letter.

My country's nationality requires to apply for a sticker visa but if you have USA Visa or if you are a permanent resident of USA you can apply for E-visa.

I wanted to ask if the expired green card and the extension letter would allow me to apply for a E-visa or should i apply for a sticker visa instead.

The problem with applying for a sticker visa is they require extra documentation and i have to buy a ticket before applying for the visa. E-visa is pretty easy to apply and you get it right away.

Anyone who had a similar case as mine and has tried to travel to turkey with the extension letter?

Thanks

Hi! I have the same thing! Did you just show it to them? Or did they ask for Marriage Cert etc.,

Did they ask a lot of question over it? Please share your experience :)

Hi! Will you share your experience please? I’ll be flying this weekend. Married name on Expired green card +extension letter and maiden name on passport/ticket. Just wondering who will question it airline or TSA? Sorry it’s going to be my first time our the US and really nervous especially reading some horror stories about it lol
