What about at check-in for the flight back to the US? Did the airline employees at the check-in counter raise questions about the expired GC and did they know that the extension letter extended GC validity by 1 year from the expiration date?

I'm traveling soon on expired GC with extension letter. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

The letter states it so there's no issue.

I did not read through this entire thread, but my wife and I are traveling to her home country of Guyana in a little under 2 months. She too received that extension letter,  believe last August or September. She recently received another letter telling her that her paperwork was transferred from VT to TX. Based on the couple of posts I perused, it appears she is ok to travel to and back with no issues as long as she has that letter?

I see some folks saying you can take a photo of it with a phone and that is accepted also?

Just about an hour ago, before she went to sleep, she was worried about this which prompted me to come to VJ to make sure the coast is clear with just that letter.

EDIT TO ADD: I just went back to the first page to look at the posted link only to find it has been removed and that the post was from TWO years ago just as we ended Bizarro World. So, are the same rules still in place? Any changes? Any worries?

She’s fine to travel with combo of the letter and expired GC (letter alone isn’t sufficient). It must be the originally, watermarked letter — photocopies or images on a phone will not be accepted.

She needs to carry the expired green card and original watermarked extension letter (not the transfer letter).

Hello! My wife and I are traveling to Turks and Caicos with my expired greencard and extension letter. Has anyone traveled to Turks and Caicos with this? Was it an issue? Thanks!!

Shouldn't be an issue  if you carry the original extension letter along with the expired I-551 card......

Travel to India with I-551 stamp.  No issues at Delhi airport and immigration.  At JFK, they sent for secondary screening and they said that they need to check the authentically of the stamp and after 1hr 30 minutes waiting, name was called and handed over the passport without any questions.

In the past, we traveled using extension letter and expired GC, never had to go for secondary screening , so it seems extension letter +EX GC is better.

Hi All,

Again to be clear, Once the application of the I751 is turned in, and the check has been processed, and a NOA received, shortly after an extension letter is to be sent?  Anyone know how long it took to receive the extension letter?   We have expiration on Sept 17th, 2019 but my wife is flying out on the 21st (to mexico from USA) but I will definitely apply for her 90 days in advance exactly to give us much time as possible to receive the letter.

Thanks

Andy

It took us exactly 7 days from date of I-751 delivery at USPS PO Box in Dallas to our in-hand receipt of the actual extension letter......7 days!!!  See my spreadsheet at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Id1duRRByZHJmhEzl9N25GqwzcnUyLCR4e4N9W6zGLg/edit#gid=0

Ok  thats is really good to know.. !  And to be clear the NOA1 you received on 4/6/2019 is the extension letter or a NOA1 was received and with that the same day a extension letter is received?  Sorry I haven't seen a physical copy of the extension letter.  My filing window begins in June and I'm starting get prepped.   Its like SAT's all over again.

Mailed I-751 package on 3/28/19

USCIS received the package on 3/30/19

Check was cashed on 4/4/19

Received actual extension letter. (light blue, water-marked paper) on 4/6/19

I-797 notice date on the letter is 4/2/19

I don't know if this is the norm.....

The NOA1 IS the extension letter. They're not different, but one and the same. NOA1 paper says they've received the application and extends the green card for 18 months from expiration date. Usually sent out between 1 and 3 weeks after i751 package is received by USCIS.
