I'll be traveling next month to India -

1. I plan to travel with Valid passport, expired green card and 12-month extension letter. Should I carry anything else with me?

2. Has anyone been through secondary inspection because I'll be landing in JFK and catching connecting flight which is in 3 hours gap, should bother changing my flight beforehand or 3 hours will be enough?

I was secondaried. I will in my two years of my current GC (My conditional GC was still valid). They took me a separate room. I sat around for 30 mins before I was called in. Someone from ICE asked me questions about my entire life history and then let me go.

I asked him "What triggered this inspection?". He said "Nothing"

All - I will be travelling with 18 month extension letter and Expired GC. While coming back to the US, assuming I go into the PR line -

1. Do I scan my expired GC on the machine? Or will that not work?

2. I am assuming I will get the slip with a Big X on it - and I will have to go to a counter?

Please share your experiences? Thanks

your green card wont work on the scanner machine. You need to fall in line like what the tourist does since you have expired green card.

That's what I did when travelling back to JFK with extension letter and expired green card.

I am posting this because I couldn't find any information prior to this on this forum.

We applied to ROC and because of the delays that happened with the change of lockboxes and services centers I got my first NOA after 3 months of filing.  My 3 children were included in my application.  None of them are mentioned in the NOA.  Our green cards expired before the NOA arrived, my daughter was out of the country and I sent her my NOA to help her cross the border with her expired green card.  She was able to enter the USA without any problems, but in order to avoid any potential problems while traveling, we are getting the I-551 stamp next week.

You don't have to go to the tourist line. Go to the PR line and tell them that you have an extension letter. They'll route you to an cbp agent directly.

I just got back today. Landed at ORD. Was with my USC wife. Went to the PR line and told the lady that I have a letter - she sent me to the visa line. Luckily there were almost no people there. Process was simple, no questions asked - no secondary. I did get a secondary last time with an unexpired green card - so was fully expecting a secondary.  Maybe got lucky :)

I was instructed to go to the tourist line by the CBP agent so I just followed the instructions and did not have secondary inspections, each airport have different rules I guess your airport was different.

Hey there! I am traveling to my home country of Mexico in a few weeks with an extension and my expired green card. However, I apply for the removal of conditions with a waiver as I got a divorce of my ex-husband. Do any of you have a similar experience? Did you had issues coming back?

Hey my experience below:

I traveled to Mexico city directly to Boston Logan. Everyone in the customs knew what to do with my extension letter and did not even got me to go to the machines. I went directly to the counter. The agent asked me a few questions and let me pass.

All good and easier than traveling with an almost expired greencard!

I returned back in US at JFK airport on extension letter, since I'm Global Entry member - went straight to the Global Entry kiosk area and mentioned about to expire Green card with extension letter. The officer was readily available at the Global Entry kiosk; checked all documents (passport, green card, extension letter), took fingerprint scans and I was on my way - he only asked when did I receive this letter which matched with date on extension letter. He did not stamp anything on passport either, nor asked for secondary screening.

Surprisingly, the whole process took only 2-3 minutes; thanks to Global Entry for saving my time as multiple flights arrived together.

--------

My flight arrived via Frankfurt and Germany requires a transit visa for Indian citizens unless you've had valid US Immigration documents. I had no issue with the extension letter except at Mumbai airport while check-in luggages - Carrier needed to see Germany visa for transit, which was cleared after 5-10 min back and forth. Followed by similar issue at Mumbai Airport passport control - I was sent to secondary check at Mumbai airport and cleared after Supervisor approval.

Hi all,

I have a question about traveling with my new 18-months extension letter, i will be traveling in december and out 3 months expire, andI will be back in March my extension letter will be expire in May . POE JFK , I've traveled with my 12 months extensions and expired green card and came back with no problem, but with this new 18 months letter i was curious about it.  Do i need to get a stamp on passport or my 18months letter is good enough.

My spouse is an Indian citizen and we are also flying to India via Germany (Lufthansa). We contacted the German consulate in the US and were told that the extension letter + expired green card was same as green card and we would not require a transit Visa.
