You cannot travel without an I-551 stamp. Make an Infopass to get one.

That is definitely a start, but may not be enough for Mexico travel. Mexican visa might be required for a visitor lacking a valid physical green card.

Has anyone been out of country more than 5 and less than 6 months?

Did they ask you to provide ties to usa at the border?

CBP can. It's entirely at their discretion to admit someone with a lecture, ask to see proof of US ties, or no questions asked.

There is a thread or two on this site where a LPR was questioned extensively returning after just 2 months overseas.

Hi all,

I just have a concern that I would like to clear here.

I filled my I-751 in April 2018. Got my biometrics done, received I-797 notice for an year extension which clearly states allowed travel and work until june 2019.

For a safer side, I got my passport stamped as I am travelling to India.

Will my travel be safe? What documents do I carry with me as my green card is no more with me. Field officer took it while stamping my passport.

Please help!

You generally only go get a stamp once your extension letter is about to expire - and many offices (not all) take your green card away at that point as you can no longer use the expired extension letter anyway.

You will not be able to use your extension letter to travel, as it is only valid with a green card - the stamp is what they will be looking for when you travel now.

Stamp clearly says it serves as a permanent residence proof, maybe carry a paper copy of your green card if you saved one.

You could carry a copy of your green card but its not necessary.  Stamp is all you need.  Think of it as the visa that was put into your passport when you were approved for your K1 or I-130 visa.  Personally, I like to travel with less.  Its one less piece of ID I have to worry about.

There was a case where guy wasnt let on a plane with just a stamp,i read it on trip advisor, norwegian airline, but that must be an isolated case because at that time processing was much shorter and people with letters and stamps were rare i think...

I almost got denied at Auckland international airport two months ago because check in staff didn’t recognize an I-551 stamp.

2 hours of negotiation and they finally gave me my boarding pass. Had no trouble once in the USA.

You should've asked them to call the supervisor, who should be aware of the Carrier Info Guide, below

Oh believe me I did. I had a copy of this document on my phone because they didn't! I ended up giving them my phone with the PDF to take to their supervisor, and after an hour and a bit of back and forth, they finally relented.
