Thank you. I'm just confused with the other receipt i have here.

Which one is that?

If you received Form I-797C, Notice of Action, that is your Biometrics notice.  Did you get one of these and did you attend?

Dear @Derwood

I tried to click on the link you posted here but it has stopped working.

Could you post it again, please?

Thank you

Here is a "new" one.

https://www.cbp.gov/sites/default/files/assets/documents/2017-Nov/carrier-information-guide-english.pdf

You'd need the info on p. 10. & p.38

Good luck!!!

The one titled, in the top right hand corner,  I-797, Notice of Action is the one you carry with your GC should you leave USA and wish to return.  It is proof that your expired GC is not expired; it is extended.

The one titled, again in the top right hand corner, Form I-797C, Notice of Action is your biometrics letter, which you should have had stamped when you attended your biometrics appt.  You keep this in your file of documents in case it is needed later in your application process to Naturalize.  You do not need this form to re-enter the USA when travelling.

Hope this helps.

Good luck!!!

Thank you so much! I got the information on those pages.

It was very helpful.

I will just travel to Canada- by car.

My next question is- by the time I am exiting and reentering the country, my extension letter will expire soon after (well, 2 months afterward)

Should I get a stamp in the passport?

How does that work?

Does anybody have experience with that?

Thank you!

Yes, you should get the stamp.  Best to be safe than sorry.  If you don't prior to your travels then you should have enough time afterwards.

You need to make an info pass appt.  When you go you will need to bring all your documents (passport --be sure that isn't going to expire in the next 6-12 months as it might take that long to get your I-751 approved, your expired GC, your extension letter, your info pass appt notice along with your I-751 application (just in case--on never knows)) to this appt.  It is not necessary for the USC to attend but it won't hurt.  Some IO have kept the expired GC and stamped the passport with a 551 stamp, others have returned the expired GC and stamped the passport.

If your field office is a busy one (I'm not sure if Chicago is) it might take you some time to book an appt.  Some say checking around midnight or very early in the morning provides better opportunity in getting an appt.  Personally, I haven't had to do that since my field office isn't overly busy. If yours is busy, I'd start trying to hunt down an appt sooner than later as it can be a huge time consuming task checking all the time.

Now, as for the stamp.  I personally tried in Feb. to get my stamp (my extension expires in Sept.) since I do a far amount of travelling back and forth to Canada.....and the CO in YYZ recommended I get the stamp asap, but the IO officer at my appt declined me telling me to return when my extension letter expired.  Others, such as a good Canadian friend of mine who is in the same boat as me but lives in another state, tried several months before their's expired and was given the stamp.  Others on here have gone a month or so prior to their expiry and have received the stamp without question.

I am trying again in early August as I intend to visit Canada for the Canadian Thanksgiving. If I wait til my GC extension letter expires that's cutting it too close.  You will find each field office has different procedures and each IO, IMO, has their own too.  I went early just cause I had the time and wanted it out of the way prior to the nice weather of spring and summer; a time when we are super busy with life.

ps. if you do decide to make an info pass appt earlier, I'd bring along your travel plans, that might help get the stamp early.

Has anyone have experience travelling through Canada with NOA1?

I'm planning to travel home with Canadian Airlines. So the route will be US - Canada - Home country.

Any additional documents necessary at a Canadian airport?

Are Canadian officials familiar with expired Greencard + NOA1?

Thanks!

I did, in Sept. 2017. With Air Canada/Lufthansa. Not a problem, at all. And yes, Canadian Customs,  is well aware what a "combo" of NOA-1 + expires green card stands for - so no worries :)

The only thing - you might need a eTA (electronic Travel Authorization). Depends on your country of origin .Here is a link  - you can check and see. And if you need one, it costs $7 and  takes 3 minutes to apply and you will have your eTA approval via e-mail. Valid for 5 years,

Good luck and have a safe trip!!!

I have several times. Nothing to worry about.  Canadian Immigration officers know the drill and are very welcoming.  Have your letter, expired GC and passport ready and your good to go.

ps Canadian Airlines??  I think you mean Air Canada.  Air Canada acquired Canadian Airlines long ago. ;)

pss Are you sure you want to go there?  Ontario is still in a deep freeze :o....not sure about the rest of it.....dress warmly and have a lot of fun.  I'm headed there in 2.5 weeks....yeah!

True :) Last September it was my first time , traveling through Canada... I loved it! And I'm planning my next trip to Ukraine again through Toronto.

But   still - if OP is not a Canadian, when it needs to be checked if eTA needed for OP to travel through Canada. The only thing air companies'' employees were worried about was what did i have to travel through Canada.. Nobody really was concerned if I had something to enter the US :) ..until I landed in Toronto and had to go through both, US & Canada Customs.
