CR1 visa, IV expires on

I have a question on what to do before the IV expiration date. My husband was told to make an appointment at the US Consulate before the 6 months were up om his visa. Im not understanding why this is necessary, he is not too great at explaining things or remembering details. He was not given a paper or anything with an explanation. On his visa its stamped " PROVISIONS OF SEC.215 I&N ACT..." and then its faded.. Admitted Nov 17, 2016 and tjen in handwriting there is CR1 Nov. 16, 2018. Please help, i dont k ow what to do..
