Hi, my Canadian passport expires in August. I was getting ready to renew it but I have to travel home next month unexpectedly for my mother's memorial service. I know there's a 6 month rule for having a valid passport for visiting, does this apply if you have a green card too?

Thanks in advance!

Are you travelling back to Canada?  There is no 6 month rules for Canadians (or Americans) entering Canada  - your passport has to be valid for the duration of your trip if you are planning to fly with a commercial airline; your passport can be expired for land entry.  Call CBSA if you want to confirm or have more questions - always helpful 506-636-5064

I am sorry for your loss

Passport Canada will renew your passport by mail within 20 days, so depending on your departure day, you may be able to get it in time.

Alternatively, since you're going to Canada, you can go into an office in Canada and apply for a renewal in person and just pay the surcharge to have it processed while you're there visiting.

Thanks, but I'm wondering about getting back into the USA.

Yeah, our departure date looks like it'll be the 19th, so that's not enough time. Is there a way to express it from the USA side, or just back home? I have a 4 month old and my husband can only get that weekend off work. I'm trying to avoid flying alone with the baby.

Same, you need a valid Canadian passport (no 6-month) to re-enter the USA + whatever document to show your current status (Green Card, Advance Parole, etc.)

Again, if you would like to reverify what I am saying, you can call CBP, but I can assure you there are currently no rules (for Canadians) that their passports have to be valid for longer.

No, they don't offer the expedited service for applications from the US.  It all goes to Gatineau for processing, whereas in person centres will have a regional office that does the expedition.  For example, if you apply in Brampton, ON for a passport with expedited service, you have to pick it up in Mississauga, ON.  At least that's how it was last time I applied in Canada.

But like someone stated, getting into Canada won't be the issue.  There also shouldn't be an issue returning but you never know.

Emergency passport services are offered in most of the diplomatic missions in the USA.  Caveat: it is expensive and you will not receive a regular passport but a temporary one (or a travel document).

Funny how everything that's an "emergency" has a much higher price tag.  Way to cash in on misfortune.

I didn't know that, so thanks for that.  I think she was looking for a proper passport though bc the concern would be re-entry to the US, not Canada.

I paid $100 for premium processing in Toronto and got a passport same day a few years ago.  I should have sprung for the 10 year

Thanks for the links! I wasn't able to find something official before those :) Googling while sleep deprived isn't the best idea lol.

Damn. They should really start to offer that...I bet a lot of people would use it.

Thanks everyone for the quick responses. I'll make sure to call them on Monday to confirm.

SIN is not required to get a Canadian passport; unrelated.  SIN cards are no longer accepted as supported ID if I remember correctly.   If you want to change the name on your passport, you will need to complete a full application, not the simplified one.

You also need to submit evidence of your name change; so your marrieage certificate, but also ID in your married name (Green card, State ID card, driver's licence, etc.), then your application and pictures will have to be signed by a guarantor (can be a Canadian citizen with a Canadian passport or a professional guarantor; just see the different applications avaialble on the Passport Canada website).
