I'll defer to other Canadians for specifics, but my understanding is that you must be physically present in Canada for 6 months of the year in order to qualify for the Canada Health Act coverage:

http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/hcs-sss/medi-assur/faq-eng.php

"Most provinces and territories also require residents to be physically present 183 days annually, and provide evidence of their intent to return to the province. "

The implications apply to anybody outside Canada for 183 days (barring certain exceptions that are beyond my understanding, but US immigration aspects are not one of them).

Once you've filed for permanent residency you effectively abandon your provincial health care immediately.  It's unlawful fb use it

This is correct.  The day you leave Canada with the intent to be a PR somewhere else, you forfeit your right to provincial health care.

It it was fun doing taxes this year bc I had to file as a non-resident in both Canada and the US.

Yes, you have to meet the substantial presence test.  The way it was explained to me (from a government employee so I took it with a grain of salt bc they don't always know what they're talking about) is that if you file for an IV, but are still residing in Canada while its pending, you're still an ordinary resident, so long as you spend 183 days in Canada.

On an unrelated note: I attempted to get my SIN changed to my married name and the agent I spoke with, and her supervisor, both told me it was illegal for me, a Canadian citizen, to move to the US and marry a USC, which is obviously not true, but back to that whole not knowing what they're talking about sometimes.

Jesus there goes my precious free Healthcare 😢 I guess husband has to include me in his work insurance. In the meantime, I cannot afford to get sick.

Which reminds me, considering his is a private insurance how soon can I be added while the i-485 is pending?

Also your experience with a Canadian agent sounds like a clusterfuck. Lol thou shall not marry a USC!

He needs to check with his HR.  Marriage is a qualifying event but I'm unsure how long after a marriage is considered for adding people.  Otherwise you'd have to wait until open enrollment I believe

I know, I was sad to lose OHIP.  Sure it has its deficiencies but at least I didn't have to claim bankruptcy if I fell and broke my leg (I fall a lot.)

I stock piled my asthma inhalers and allergy meds before I left, bc I had no idea how it was going to work here.  The pharmacy probably shouldn't have refilled so many, and my Canadian employer insurance probably shouldn't have approved the claims, but whatever.

I know with my husbands insurance through work he had to add me within 15. days of a "life change".  Not sure if that's a benchmark for Univera or standard.

I spent about 4 minutes trying to make them understand how assinine that statement was but gave up bc I can't fix stupid.

The norm is 90 days after the qualifying event. After that, you're usually SOL and have to wait until open enrollment.
