Hi, my husband just received his USA residency card under K1 process, he has a Cuban issued passport. Now we want to visit Europe but looking through the web I see the USA residency status  is not taken into account when traveling to Germany or France etc and he still needs to apply for a tourist visa complete with embassy visit and full documentation submission.ie:financial sustainability, employment letter, etc.

The residency card was issued November 2016, we still have a while to to before we can start the USA citizenship process.

Does this mean we will need to wait until he has his US citizenship to visit Europe? (or just go through the various tourist visa processes)  By the way, the same rules apply when going to any  South American countries like Colombia and Argentina..sheesh!!

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

As a green card holder, he still has to use his Cuban visa to travel, so if a country requires a tourist/travel visa he must apply for it with his Cuban passport.

Once he becomes a USC, then he will be able to obtian a US passport.

He can still travel and all; but yes you must go through the process and apply for visas if necessary.

US residency card is just that.. allows permanent resident\work status, and ease of entry to the US. He is still a Cuban citizen and subject to everything that entails.

Green Card allows visa-free travel to certain countries (for instance, Canada, Mexico, most Caribbean nations) , unfortunately does not help with Schengen visa. Once he becomes a US citizen it will be different but until that he is under visa requirements for Cuban passport holders. GC would only help him apply for his visas at a consulate within United States.

You can still apply for a tourist visa with his Cuban passport.  It should be pretty easy given that he is a US greencard holder. My husband and I traveled to Costa Rica before he got his citizenship and he had to go to the embassy and request a visa. Other than having to compile all the required documentation (application, bank info, photos, etc.), it was a pretty painless procedure.
