I'm trying to print my co sponsors Tax Transcripts on the IRS website and there are 4 different options for the previous years.

1: Return Transcripts

2: Record of Account Transcripts

3: Account transcripts

4: Wage and Income Transcripts

I'm not sure which ones I need to print, I'd imagine it's the 4th one though?

I print a Wage and tax statement and it's rather hard to read, as some of the numbers are replaced with letters. For example one of them says 'A,AN2.RR'. If I send these to my fiance, will the consulate and whoever else see's it be able to read this? Or do I have to go about getting these a different way.

  • Tax Return Transcript - shows most line items including your adjusted gross income (AGI) from your original tax return (Form 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ) as filed, along with any forms and schedules. It doesn’t show changes made after you filed your original return. This transcript is only available for the current tax year and returns processed during the prior three years. A tax return transcript usually meets the needs of lending institutions offering mortgages and student loans. Note: the secondary spouse on a joint return must use Get Transcript Online or Form 4506-T to request this transcript type. When using Get Transcript by Mail or phone, the primary taxpayer on the return must make the request.

The secondary spouse? Does that mean the co sponsor?

Also just the regular get transcripts online and printing them off will do just fine? or does this mean I have to get it mailed to me.

Yes , just down load from the site and print off.. make sure you have multiple copies to keep just in case..

Thank you for being so helpful. You're a good person :)

So does that mean if I say, filed with turbotax I can just print out the submitted tax forms from there rather than the IRS site?

I am not familiar with turbo tax and its legal standing... just become LPR filed first return  with the help of a tax accountant...

my thoughts are that , if Turbo tax was considered an adequate alternative, we would be hearing people doing that... not sure they are... IRS online transcripts are the safest bet  imo...

Well it's just a copy of the tax forms (1040 etc) filed through turbotax with the irs, since that's what it appeared to be asking for.

It's easy enough to get your IRS tax transcripts from IRS.gov and plenty of people have had success with it. Just to be safe I'd say go with that. Best not to play with fire this late into the game.

Except for those of us who don't use credit cards, have a mortgage, car loan etc. I have a debit card and student loans but apparently those aren't good enough to verify my identity, the hell can't they ask for a passport number or something, at least for electronic access. Well I guess with the delays we're having with the final police clearance 5-10 days isn't the end of the world, ill just have to have my mom stateside scan in the transcripts and email them to me.

Unless turbotax is an official part of the IRS i would not go that way....so dont know.... try and let us know?

Turbo Tax is just an electronic tax filing service.  It helps you complete and submit your IRS tax returns electronically instead of filing and mailing a paper return.  It is a legit service and thousands of people use it to complete their tax returns.  You get your refund (if applicable to your situation) faster.  With Turbo Tax you have the option of being able to print copies of your form 1040, or whichever form you filed.  In that case if you choose to submit your acual tax refund, then you would need to submit your W-2's, etc.

But...yeah...that is all Turbo Tax is.  I used it myself this year. :)

I would recommend printing the transcript from the IRS website. You want to select Return Transcripts.  You could, instead, send a copy of the actual 1040 your co-sponsor filed, but if you do that, you would need to include copies of all the additional forms he/she sent with the 1040 plus copies of all W-2s and all 1099 forms he/she received.

It's really easy to go to www.irs.gov and select to have them mailed to you.  All you need is the social security number of the first person listed on the tax return.  You select the year you want sent to you and they mail them out right away.  I've done this many times throughout this process and I always receive them in a little over a week.  You can select as many years returns as you would like.  I definitely recommend getting the IRS transcripts as opposed to sending in copies of prepared tax returns along with all W2's.  They are the preferred documentation by USCIS.  Hope this helps!  Best wishes in your journey!!

A printed tax 1040 or any other tax form only shows you have filed, it doesn't indicate the IRS accepted and processed your taxes. You can add in the 1040 print outs as an additional thing with W2 forms and recent pay stubs, but the best thing is a return transcript from the IRS site. Just putting this out there, I could not for the life of my figure exactly how to instantly print my transcripts. I ended up requesting them by mail and they showed up a week later.

Account transcripts are for people who owed a big amount after filing or got audited/adjusted and need to show proof they are in the clear with IRS debts, you just want a good old return transcript :)

Right, and I agree the transcripts are much better proof of filing taxes with the IRS.  I was just describing what Turbo Tax was for those who weren't familiar with it. ;)

I had to print both the Form W-2 and Tax Statement as well as the Tax Return Transcript.  This was because I was deployed to a Combat Zone and did not pay federal tax that year.  The Tax Return Transcript did not report my "Nontaxable Combat Pay" and it would have looked like my total income was below the poverty line.  However, the Form W-2 and Tax Statement DID report my "Nontaxable Combat Pay" which made me well above the poverty line several times over.

Therefore it is important to see if there are any differences.  If there is, you may want to consider sending copies of both documents.  If they are the same, I would just print the Tax Return Transcript.

Instead of having the IRS send them to you, you can also print them yourself or save a copy for your records saving valuable time.

But I agree.  Very easy to go to www.irs.gov and do it yourself.
