As I was listing my favorite shows before - I realized I left one off - and an important one at that. I heart Simon Pegg - so I can't believe I forgot to include "Spaced" - which I think was my fiance's litmus test for our relationship. If I hadn't liked that show, we probably wouldn't have made it.

We found Spaced at a specialty video rental place in SF on VHS, but it isn't made in Region 1 DVD. So my fiance painstakingly translated it so I could watch it here (doesn't count as bootlegging if it's our property already and I'm not selling it!). But my ####### old DVD player just couldn't handle it and wouldn't play the discs, so how was I to share them with my friends?

Well, maybe it was an excessive investment for two DVDs, but I got a new and improved DVD player and looky looky - it works!

And just in time to get through both series before the US premiere of Hot Fuzz on April 20!!!!

So it's not an NOA2, but it made my day a bit better.

LOL....whatever makes your day more tolerable!

Did you have to pay a lot for your player? This convo comes up here now and again. We were able to get a region-free player for about $35. We've had it nearly two years now, so it was a good bargain.

Sadly, it's not a region free, but the guy at the store said there's a DVD you can get online somewhere that will reprogram a player's software to make it regionless, or allow you to switch between regions. Not sure about - but have assigned the research to my fiance.

I paid about $62 from Best Buy - it's a dual DVD/VCR player.

p.s. the high from getting that lasted about an hour - until I was PM-ing with a fellow VJer while she got an RFE email! ACK! Back to the grind - and the worry - today. . . . .

Well RFE's aren't always a bad thing. From what I remember people who got an RFE seemed to get a NOA2 very soon after that.

I don't know first hand. I never even got touched.

Hmm.. What happened to the Region 1 DVD of Spaced? It was supposed to come out, but Amazon don't have a release date listed for it any more.

They did show it on TV here a while back (around when Shaun of the Dead came out), but it was on some funny TV channel like Trio (which I don't think even exists any more). Still, at least they didn't edit it.

EDIT: My wife loves Spaced, she still laughs about it whenever she hears the song "Come on Eileen". We're looking forward to Hot Fuzz a lot.

I dunno when/why they haven't issue a Region 1 version yet. Like I said, we found it on VHS, but never found a release date for a US DVD set either.

They've shown all the eps on BBC America, but, for some unknown reason, they edit it (for time, I believe). Shows like Little Brit, Coupling, and most other 30 min BBC sitcoms, run for 40 mins on BBCAm to allow for commercials. But noooooooo they edit Spaced down to 30 min total running time - stripping out some of the jems that devoted fans expect and have a tendency to say "wait for it . . . " about - only to find them missing. Unacceptable!

I had some data copies I could play on Divx, and we used to have an older laptop that I switched to Region 2, but none of those allowed for really easy viewing for guests, etc, who need to see the good programs!

Spaced was a Channel 4 show so it originally had ad breaks unlike BBC shows, so its not as bad as you might think. Still a US sitcom is about 22 mins (out of 30 mins) whereas a British sitcom (non-BBC) is about 25 mins I believe, so BBCA still have to edit about 3 mins out!

Ok...it's a CyberHome player.

It's not automatically 'region free' - like you stick a UK DVD in it and it starts to play. But the code can be re-set. We have the code somewhere around the house here if anybody buys one of these.

To make any DVD player region free, just do a google search for DVD region free hacks or something like that. I made mine region free just by hitting a few numbers on the remote - easy peezy!

Here's an example: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks
