Hi There

I just wanted to get confirmation for this as I wasn’t sure from reading others posts. I am currently on medication for anxiety attacks (propranolol) – I don’t take the medication every day it’s just an as and when type of situation – but I’ve read that some people have had to get letters from their doctors to explain this. I don’t have depression – just some anxiety every so often – so do I still need to get a letter?

I’m also on medication for my IBS, which is called amitriptyline – which I take every night. I’m just wondering do I need the doctor to explain this in the letter also – I’m only asking because this type of medication can also be prescribed for depression. It’s not what I’m on it and I’m on such a low dosage it wouldn’t be enough to treat depression for but because I take medications , does the letter need to explain this and the conditions/dosage etc.?

Thank you!

Yas

If you have any sort of mental health issue it is always a good idea to get a letter from your doctor detailing how long you've had it, how well controlled it is, and what you take for it. This is especially true for people with disorders that might cause them to harm themselves or others.

USCIS is going to want to know how likely you are to be a problem because of illness and so the panel physician is going to have to rely on the reports of the doctors who know you best in order to make the decision on how to classify any health problems you might have.

With respect to the amitriptyline, chances are the panel doctor will understand that you're not using it for depression. Tricyclic antidepressants are not used very much these days for depression because we have other much better and safer drugs for depression. But they are still used for other, non-depression conditions. If you're still worried it won't hurt anything to have your doctor mention it too, though.

Thank you so much for such a detailed reply! I'll get my doctor to write a letter just on the safe side then!! :)

Knightsbridge clinic in London will for sure want information from your GP. It doesn't have to be a "letter" as in Dear Sir. Just a short report where anything you take meds for is explained and the med dosage. Also any previous surgeries or conditions. On the anxiety bit,  it would be to your benefit if the language included the magic words "not a threat to yourself or others".

Yeah I'd seen that "not a threat to yourself or others" line on previous posts - so I'll make sure they write that down! Thank you for your advice! :):)
