they don't need that to apply for SSN (see under 'noncitizen'). But you have to bring two ID documents, so EAD and passport. Maybe i-94 printed out/copy of (expired) visa, to be on the safe side.

Thanks. So the EAD and my passport it is! Anyone know how long it takes to get the SSN once applying?

When I applied for my SSN the SSA office told me that it can take 10 to 14 business days until the card is in the mail. I received the letter 8 days later.

My husband was able to apply for some jobs in-between getting his EAD and applying for his social security number. We had to wait a few extra days to go to the social security office after his EAD came in (due to office closures). He was given a paper saying he applied for a ss# but it did not have the number on it. It took about two weeks, maybe less, to get the card.

If you have a job offer, speak to them as soon as you have your EAD. It's definitely worth trying to apply for jobs even if the ss# hasn't come through yet. You can update them after it comes. Good luck!

I think it varies when one gets it because you are still going through SAVE database while waiting for your SSN. It all depends on how fast you are going through SAVE.
Every federal institution has to verify you before issuing the actual card.

Edit; Verifying should be easier and quicker when you have your EAD.

even better, you can start working before the SSN card comes in, as long as you have a letter stating you applied for it. I'm not sure if employers are willing to do that, but you could bring the printout of the official SSA website where that is stated (see link in my earlier post).

If they want  you to wait, well, then your start date will be about 2 weeks later.

Just a quick update - I got my EAD/AP combo card on last Friday (Apr 21), went to Social Security Administration (SSA) office in my city on Monday, applied for Social Security card no problem - just need to show the EAD card and a passport. Should get it in a week, up to two. Thanks for the help guys!
