SSN while waiting for EAD

Hi, my EAD was approved a week ago (based on I-485 GC through marriage), and is currently still "being produced". I should probably get it in the next week or two, but until then, I have a job offer waiting ,and I would like to start right away once I'll finally get my EAD. I never worked in the US before so I will have to get an SSN as well.

Is there a way to get SSN before getting the actual EAD card?

And if not, is there a way to start working the moment I get my EAD (or even before, since I do have the letter that my EAD was approved and is being produced and I will get it promptly).

Thanks,

Thanks,

There's a small window of time to get a SS# once you get here most get in within the 2 weeks. You have waited to long. Your I-94 is expired correct? And it's way too late since you have filed. You have to wait now for the EAD then you can go to the SS office.

When you apply for your SSN at the office, you get a letter stating you applied for a SSN and it's in process. You can actually show this letter to your employer and start working. See this website:

https://www.ssa.gov/employer/hiring.htm

Also: https://www.uscis.gov/e-verify/questions-and-answers/my-employee-applied-social-security-number-ssn-has-not-yet-received-it-what-should-i-do

You have to wait for your EAD though.

Thanks, I came in on a J1 visa almost a year ago, and the J1 visa is expired long time ago, and it doesn't give me rights to work now anyway.

Can you ask for SSN only in the office in the city you reside at or any office?

SSN is assigned in the city you reside in. You have to show proof of residence.

You will have to wait for the EAD then immediately go to the SS office. Hopefully they will give you a letter with your number. But you will at least get a letter that might suffice to your employer. Or you will just have to wait the 10 to 14 days after applying.

Thanks, I have moved to live with my wife parents in a different state, and change my address for my I485  application. So can I apply for SSN in this state once I get my EAD?

I don't understand what ID you are referring to.

The problem again - I will get my EAD to where I currently reside - with my wife's parents. But my last rented apartment was in a different state. Would that be a problem once I'll have my EAD to get an SSN, or it can be done in any state?

I did change my address to this current one (my wife's parents) with USCIS.

the documents needed for SSN are listed on the SS website. There is no proof of address asked - maybe tariq_a is referring to documents needed to get a drivers license?

https://www.ssa.gov/ssnumber/ss5doc.htm

There's nothing in there that forces you to go to a specific office, as far as I can tell.

I think so! Don't forget to take your passport (or birth certificate). The card production may have had a delay for Easter holidays?

i meant State Issued ID or Driver License, you would need your birth Certificate and Passport.
