One of the requirements to submit with my affidavit of support from my embassy says,

"Notarized copies of his or her latest federal income tax return"....

I have my lastest income tax return that I submitted via Turbo Tax which of course was not signed.

How do I go about getting my latest tax return notarized? Do I just go to my nearest notary and have the tax return notarized? Will I have to sign the tax return in front of the notary or will the notary notarize the tax return without my signature (of course after I show her my identification)?

Whats the purpose of having the tax return notarized?

me_f_musalatest,

Are you 100% sure "Notarized" copies of the Tax Return were the words used? (Did you submit a tax return?)

Because I'm not sure what the purpose of a notary would be, other than watch you sign it and put his/her stamp on it. No, they wouldn't stamp a blank document.

OR - did they want you to notarize the I134 (affidavit of support) - did you do this beforehand?

I believe it is the Affidavit of Support that is need to be notarized and not the ITR :)

At one point tax returns were required to be notarized ... I guess to show it is a "true copy." It still indicates notarized on websites (UK embassy had it) but my lawyer said it was out of date. However, to be on the safe side, my lawyer signed a letter saying that the attached return was a "true copy" ... not that he would really know. I don't think most people have anything other than the tax return and many times the Embassy does not even ask for the tax return.

I’m aware that the I-134 needs to be notarized (which has already been done) but the instructions from the Jerusalem Consulate say:

To substantiate the information regarding income and resources the sponsor should attach the following items to the affidavit:

1.)Notarized copies of his or her latest federal income tax return;

2.)Statement from employer showing salary and the length and permanency of employment;

3.)A statement from an officer of a bank regarding his or her account, the date the account opened, and the present balance;

4.)Any other evidence adequate to establish financial ability to carry out his or her undertaking toward the applicant for what might be an indefinite period of time.

What would you do - would you get it notarized or leave as is and submit?

I don't think you can notarize a tax return. It's proberly a typo and they meant "certified", meaning from the IRS. If you did your tax online (I'm not one of them) you can print it out. That's a certified copy. Or you can get it from the IRS themselves which I did.

Best way is go give them a call at (800) 829-1040. It's free and I was off the phone in less than 10 minutes.

I am with you guys on this one... You don't notarize the tax return for its original intended purpose when submitting it to the IRS... A notary can only attest to the signature and does not certify or validate any information on the return.

YMMV
