Name Change with USCIS after AOS submitted

When we (my wife) submitted the AOS we used her maiden name because it matched her passport. We were a bit uneducated about the process. We realized later that if she wanted to take my name it would be difficult or impossible with USCIS. We wrote a letter to the USCIS stating that her desire is to take my family name and requested that all documents be issued in her Married name. We attached a copy of the marriage certificate, and both receipts of AOS and EAD with the letter. Since that letter was sent, we went to two INFOPASS appointments asking how we could change her name with USCIS. Both times they said it could only be done at the AOS interview. I now wanted to be sure because the state of South Carolina would not let her take the driver's license exam because her name on the USCIS documents did not match her name of proof of residence document.

Today, four months since we sent the letter, we received a letter from the USCIS that stated that they had updated their systems with the correct name.
