Hey all

I am currently two weeks out of status on my K1 visa, just waiting on tax info from my sponsor, and my husband's next pay check so we can write that big cheque. Two weeks ago we discovered that we are pregnant! Obviously we're excited but kinda worried at the same time as we don't have insurance. Can I use Medicaid? Can my husband? Or will that come against our affidavit of support? I really need advice. The time to find an OB/GYN is getting ever closer and I don't know what to do.

No you can't use Medicaid/public assistance. That's the point about being financially responsible enough to secure a visa. It prevents taxpayers from supporting non-citizens. Your husband can't use Medicaid for your expenses - it doesn't work that way in the USA. Congrats on your pregnancy!

It depends on the state you live in. Have you looked into getting health insurance?

Yeah, average is about  $200. We are in Alabama.

200$ (per month?) seems like a good price to be covered during pregnancy.  You might want to look up what is available as far as assistance when pregnant in your state.

^This.

Remember that affidavit of support your husband signed telling the US government that he will cover your expenses and not become a public charge?

That is a good price. I pay over $500 a month for my wife and I. You can call around and see what insurance can take you even after the fact. You can see if the insurance from your husband's job can put you on it. You may very well qualify. Also, you should call the hospital that you will likely have your child and see about payment plans they offer.
