Scam calls

I was wondering why we always get calls when we are in the US on our Ukrainian +38 number. The last 3 times in the US we get the same scammer call from Atlanta. They always have threats or are sexual in nature and are quite disgusting. I ran the number through google to find out that it is a scam number with complaints of the same content. Why do they only call while we are in the US....how do they know? Are immigrants on some kind of data base?

An immigrant database is highly unlikely. From time to time I also get unsolicited calls, general rule of thumb: 1) never answer a call from an unrecognized number; if they need to contact you they would leave voicemail. 2) If it is a scam call, add the number to your blocked numbers list. Google how to do that on your mobile phones model.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it's someone you know.

The call is happening on your Ukraine phone # and only when State side. I bet it's someone who knows you. It's not hard to come up with US Phone # to make these calls. Plus you mentioned some were sexual in nature. Scam calls tend to try to get you to send them money. Like give them permission to hack your computer, or send me 100 bucks and I'll send you a billion type of stuff.

Have to agree with Ontarkie, scam calls and all are generally about pay day loans, offering services and such.... anything so aggressive in nature clearly is more personal and directed at you. I would block the number if you haven't already and honestly just don't answer any from Georgia numbers anymore

They could be using a VOIP or a skype like program which will basically just generate a number, one that you can't really find who's behind and that they can safely call from.

If you can, block the number, or at the minimum, try to give that phone number a silent ringtone so you won't hear it go off, but DO NOT answer it.

Any kinds of calls like that are not considered scam calls, they're on a whole different playing field and you should be careful about it.

If I were you, I'd just get a new Ukrainian phone number and ditch that one.

 

I wouldn't trust that if this caller has your number, then can disguise it and keep calling you back even if you block the fake Atlanta number. Getting threats from an unknown number isn't really something to brush off lightly.

Something said here might have some merit. Changing the phone number might be difficult as my wife has had that number before the discovery of time. She has to keep it for business and other reasons. Not all her friends knows that she is married. She is afraid of having accounts hacked since she is married to a foreigner....people may think she has money...

She has a few male friends in the IT business....I kinda felt something wrong here and maybe there is some jealousy. And these friends of hers know when we are in the US...

 

It is kinda fishy that we only get the calls when we are in the US.....and the last 3 times....and from the same scam number.....hmmmm

People change their phone numbers all the time, I'm sure her business contacts would understand that. Or at least get a second number and tell friends about that number, then see if the calls persist on the new number. It's pretty simple to get another number in Russia. Not sure how it is in Ukraine.

 

If the calls were merely about money, bank accounts, and purely about fiscal related matters, I would understand the suspicion about money. But honestly it just seems more sinister as the other posters mentioned. It seems more like someone is trying to frighten her or maybe even blackmail her. Maybe it's out of jealousy or some other misguided emotion but it's abnormal for scammers to do something like this. I would be totally freaked out if that happened to me, whether it were abroad or in the States.

You have different types of software that will barr or block unwanted calls. Sometimes your telephone carrier willl help block unwanted calls.  Best thing, do not answer unless you know the caller or number on the caller id.
