on my wifes aos i765  forms someone told me that if you type your forms on a computer that you cannot also hand enter any information (even with black ink neatly written) any information because the bar code on the bottom of the form designates weather the form has been filled out on a computer or hand written. they told me that it wont scan correctly at uscis.  I think thats nonsense?  they told me in other words that the barcode holds the information that you have entered?  my pdf editor of the form did not allow me to enter the number 2 into the box that says enter the number that you entered in line 28 of part 3 (example numbers only) so i hand wrote the number 2 into the box.  they said it wont be excepted?

The barcode does hold information. You can see that every time you type something in the barcode changes. But if the space they provide isn't enough, are there any other options but to hand write it in?

since a form can be hand written i am assuming that the only information that can change on the bar code with your answer is if you entered anything at all into a particular box ?

I am also assuming that the bar code does not interpret what you wrote to come to that conclussion

If your form appears on its face to be written on the computer it will be separated into a pile that gets the bar code scanned. For these forms all the information that you have typed (exactly) is electronically imprinted in the barcode. If you write something by hand, on say page 2 or 3 and the person separating the forms doesn't see this and separates it into the pile to be barcode scanned that field will simply show up as empty. Many ppl have gotten rfe's saying that the information in box so and so is missing (also that rfe response will be automatically generated) because they hand wrote something.

Also - If you download the form, open Adobe Reader and then open the file from within Adobe it will let you type in all the fields. Do not click on the file link to open once downloaded or open in the web browser since this will generate the error you are describing for most browsers.

I would think the barcode registers what you actually type in, so that when it's scanned the info gets automatically registered. I have no way of confirming it, though.

Lol you are absolutely right, I just assumed it was a barcode form since you were talking about it.  Good news for you

I can also add that the most rfe's I've seen with this problem have been for the i-864 where ppl did exactly what you described for the other form, and the tip for how to open the pdf-files correctly to avoid this is as described.

the person telling me this is a life long friend who took my advice and followed in my footsteps and is going threw the same process.  we enjoy debating each other vigorously at times.  when i pointed this out his reply was that his wife said he had to get off the phone now.  lol. I said, i was wrong about the 2d barcode holding info now lets see if you can say it.   lol   i said go ahead and say it,  i was wrrrrrro     lol.  he did have me worried for a few minutes.  he got an rfe on his forms for not putting his name in a box. hahahahaha.   I dont think there is a set firm policy on anything and that everything is up to the discretion of the person reviewing the documents.  just the same as even the border agent has the option to not allow entry on an aproved k1.   thanks for your imput.  it pointed out that i was wrong about 2d bar codes in general.  this topic is google ignorant with no good search results to verify.  and the laugh i got when he said his wife said he had to get off the phone now with her laughing in the background was priceless.

For the i-765 as you say, yes, but for the 2D-forms it should be either or. Just want to make that clear for other people reading. There have been unfortunate rfe's due to this.

The I-864 part 5 1 and 2 won't let us enter any values. I tried Preview and Adobe Acrobat Reader, running on Mac. I was thinking we could simply fill them in by hand but if this thread is right about the barcode we can't do that. What is the solution?

Have you done it the way I mentioned above?

Open Acrobat Reader first  - then open through "file" in the Reader? There are so many people that say exactly what you just said, then turns out they opened from the file folder or the download link or using the plugin. I have yet to see anyone not being able to open a functioning version doing it the right way.

 

If you really can't get it to work, you can hand fill the whole form.

Thank you! It didn't work with the file that we had filled out but it did work when we opened an empty version of it so I guess we have to fill it out again this way ugh.
