Go on indeed.com, and put your native language in the search bar.....it will show you quite a few work from home translation jobs that pay by the document. I live in the middle of nowhere and I've seen them for Chinese, Arabic, Malay, Indonesian, etc....they advertise all over since it is work from home.

I didn't know that :o thank you!

Sorry to hear that. bad things happen, and it's okay as long as we get out of them with good learning. I would recommend the following:

1. Stress HR or even the manager (in a nice way) to share with you why you were let go? Is it related to the companies profits? customer compliant? performance? ...etc? Good to know that to close the gap if any. It's okay to pick up the phone and say hi, thank them for the opportunity (even if you don't want to. this makes you look more confident and professional). Then ask the manager if there was any compliant and any last piece of advice for your future career. This will leave positive impression. You don't know what may happen in the future? you may get recommended to a friend who's running another company or even asked to join the same company in the future if the reason of letting you go is purely business related.

2. Once you get hired in any company, or even if you are in a company for years, it's always good to manage expectations. From day one, set with your manager and ask him/her about their expectations. Don't accept generic or fluid answers. You may allow this in the first meeting, but a day or two later, once you know how things around are going, go back and ask for details. For example, we expect that you would handle 1,2,3 type of tasks without help from others, we expect you to take the lead on your own training and read 1-2-3 and ask questions if you have any...etc. When you set these expectations, put them in writing and send them in an email to your manager and ask him/her if you captured everything correctly and if any priorities need to be put on top of the expectations. This simple strategy will serve as a great platform to accelerate breaking the ice with your manager and show your value and potential.

wish you all the best

That is true. But I wish I could quit first, because getting fired is very embarrassing and I have never experienced that before. It destroyed my confidence. Coming from a third-world country makes me think that maybe the only job I could do here is housekeeping jobs regardless of what experiences I had because I know in here it won't matter.

Hi Ayu,

I know that I am not in the place to talk against you saying that we could only do housekeeping jobs since I have a degree from here. But, even in my field (museum) I had to volunteer (unpaid) for 1.5 years before I finally landed a job in my field that I love. I have experience working in museum too before I moved to the US, but they did not count it here. So, I tried my best to volunteer and intern while working as a babysitter. I don't know in what field you were working in Indonesia, but just don't give up and find a job that you love. Sorry for the loss of your dog. Jangan nyerah ya!

Yeah, I know that my previous experience don't matter here since they don't know even know where Indonesia is. I didn't go to the meeting today because our dog just passed away last night and I just couldn't deal with anything today. I don't even want to know the reason anymore. It's because I've been jobless for long time, I don't even have friends here and can't even find any community that I could join, and etc, things just make me feel so desperate.

I would love to have my own business too someday. If you don't mind, what kind of business you own here?

I'm from Indonesia too. PM me if you need someone to talk. The whole adjustment and immigration process is really depressing. But you're not the only one in that boat. Stay strong and positive Ayu! :)

Trust me, my husband cannot write as well as you can and his English is quite good. I am sure your English is much better than you think. And working as a cashier - it will only improve! You get to speak with people who have all sorts of accents. My husband had to accept a job that was far removed from his Bachelors degree and not what he wanted either. But sadly, when potential employers could not contact his previous bosses, it made it difficult for him to get a job. He has been at his current job for 6 months now and his boss knows that if there is no option to move up in the company or make it full time, he will find a new job. And this next search will be easier on him with prior American work history. Just as it will be with you after Lowes or USPS.

If you ever need support, please reach out to me. I watched my husband's progress this last year and I can empathize how you must be feeling.

Hi there,

So sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I haven't been on the forum for a few weeks!

Keep in mind that recruitment agencies may tell you that contracts could extend longer than they even think it would. It's their tactic to get commitment on your end... it's much easier for them when workers are flexible to their clients needs, so sometimes they may position it in a way that shows promise, but really they don't have any real duty to follow through.

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. Our dog is a family member to us so I can only imagine.

It takes time, but I assure you that you will get your groove and routine. I know it sounds cliche but you need to want to have that routine... it's going to be more on you to get out there than for others to pull you in. But once you start getting out there and building your new normal, it's amazing how quickly things start to fall into place.

Of course, I don't mind. I started my career back in early 2000's in ad tech/digital advertising. I spent the majority of my career in Canada working at agencies and was one of the first "women in mobile" (i.e. mobile apps/mobile websites/mobile e-commerce). When I moved to the US (California), I did the same type of work. It didn't make much of a difference to me because I use to travel from Vancouver to LA/SFO regularly. When I lived in Canada, it was tough to go out on my own for some reason. When I moved to the US and started working here, something in me switched and I just decided to go out on my own. As a Canadian, I decided on an LLC. I registered my business and off I went. I figured, if I could move countries indefinitely and essentially "start from scratch", then I might as well go all out... because I really don't agree with the US paternity/maternity situation and lack of balance and wanted to build that myself versus expect something that will likely not be given to me.

I read some stats a few months ago that 60% of US businesses are owned by immigrants. 40.2% of 2016 Fortune 500 firms are founded by immigrants and nearly 6 million workers are employed at immigrant-owned businesses. As an immigrant, you have just as much of an opportunity here. Let these adversities inspire you to do something else. Keep going!

Hi,

I'm Ayu. I've been living in USA since January 19th, 2017. I got my social and green card a month after I moved here and have been spending time looking for job since then. I've applied for so many jobs and finally I got a temp part-time job through a staffing agency as receptionist/customer service for a brick company. I started my job last week, and as a week went by, I didn't get a training, so basically the only thing I could do was to answer the phone and transfer it to another person at work because I didn't know how to help the customers. I couldn't even check the stock so whenever a customer came by and asked if we carried any brick/rock/anything we sell, I could never answer them because I didn't have an access to the computer. I always arrived at work 40 minutes before my schedule started and left work 20 minutes after that. My husband didn't like that because I was not supposed to be working outside my working hours and it was wrong that they let me did that. The manager said that they would train me and gave me a sign code to use the computer after a week. This week was supposed to be my second week, and since my husband was off for two days, he kept dropping me off and picking me up from work, so I arrived at work and left work 5 minutes before/after my working hours. On Wednesday, I still didn't get a sign code or a training that I needed to do the job. I talked to my husband about how I felt useless at work and that I am actually capable of so many things if they let me. Funny that after a couple of days I said it, I got a voicemail message from my staffing agency regarding my position. I called her immediately and she said I didn't have to go to work on the next day and I should meet her instead on Friday, which basically means I just got fired. I'm still confused on what reasons because on last Monday, the office manager said I was doing good. I still haven't gotten my paycheck and I don't know if they would pay for the 3 days I worked this week because I didn't get the chance for the manager to sign my time sheet.

Anyone else get fired without warning or for unknown reasons on their first job in USA?

Not sure if i read other topics around but in my own experience regardless they will need to pay you even if you work for ONE hour from ANY job in the US. For the first three months any job is probation and called "at will" which means fired for any or NO reason at all, if you are a contractor like me, they can fire you at anytime and anyday regardless how long you are there. I did get fired once on a job i didnt get trained well enough on my first real job but after that I changed career paths and happy where I am now. So i think it maybe the training they didnt give well enough or it could be they just dont need you anymore. Sometimes using a staffing agency like me would be easier to find a job because they hook you up very quick versus direct job that takes longer, but it really depends. What did you use and did you get another job yourself? All the best for you and good luck in your future endeavors! cheers!

Yeah, I did get paid. I'm not interested using a staffing agency anymore, I was with Purcell Staffing. I got the job at Lowe's now as a cashier and tomorrow is my orientation day. And I also applied at USPS, passed the exam but people said it's not a guarantee to get an interview. I guess I'm just going to do this Lowe's job first so I can get US experience and reference, I hope they won't fire me lol. All the best for you too!

USPS might be a govt job that is sometimes hard to even get an interview but u might have a high chance after passing their exam. Good luck to you!

staffing agency is worth it ONLY get ur foot on the door for any company! I used a staffing agency to get into DIRECTV now AT&T and it was helpful. You might get lucky once in a while and keep your options open for anything and work for that company uve always wanted! just my own experience, just know that if its your first week/month be as perfect as u can to impress your workers/managers so ur almost guaranteed to never get fired...also it depends on what staffing agency ur expertise is at. but starting off low and go high is the only best thing u can do.(unless ur lucky enough  with connections lol)

For reference, u can use ur friends or family no need for jobs because u dont know what the manager might say about u if u apply to another job (unless u get along quite well with the managers ahaha) Good luck and its good to share these kind of experience espeially in the US

By law you must be paid for every minute worked. If it was a temp job, they probably decided they no longer need you, and there's nothing stopping an employer from doing that especially during probation — I've fired many people myself during probation (usually because they weren't up to our standards in speed, accuracy, etc.).
