Tax transcript not yet available

Hi,

 

I am preparing to send all necessary documents to the NVC (Affidavit of Support and IV docs) .. My USC husband filed taxes about three or four weeks ago, I think, but the IRS website says the transcript for the year 2016 is not yet available. Those of you, who are US taxpayers, can you tell me how long it takes for the transcript to be available for ordering?

Another question: If the transcript for 2016 won't be ready by the time we want to send off our package, would it be okay for my husband to send :

1) 2014 tax transcript
2) 2015 tax transcript

3) 2016 copies of filed taxes (?) + W2s and 1099

 

? Would appreciate some insight

My USC fiance could already download his 2016 tax returns from the IRS website and was well within IRS timeline. The following is the availability timeline provided by IRS on their website:

Current Year Transcript Availability

 

Use the table below to determine the general timeframe when you can request a transcript for a current year Form 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ return filed on or before the April due date. Availability varies based on the method you used to file your return and whether you have a refund or balance due. 

Note: If you made estimated tax payments and/or applied your overpayment from a prior year tax return to your current year tax return, you can request a tax account transcript to confirm these payments or credits a few weeks after the beginning of the calendar year prior to filing your current year return. 

When your original return shows a ...	and you filed electronically, then	and you filed on paper, then
refund amount or no balance due,	allow 2-3 weeks after return submission before you request a transcript.	allow 6-8 weeks after you mailed your return before you request a transcript.
balance due and you paid in full with your return,	allow 2-3 weeks after return submission before you request a transcript.	we process your return in June and you can request a transcript in mid to late June.   Note:  we process all payments upon receipt.
balance due and you paid in full after submitting the return,	allow 3-4 weeks after full payment before you request a transcript.
balance due and you didn’t pay in full,	we process your return in mid-May and you can request a transcript by late May.

What you listed in your original post are acceptable. He can always try to call IRS to check if his 2016 tax returns are available because a fellow VJer's USC husband had to verify a few details for IRS before he could get his 2016 tax returns.

Yes, you can send the package exactly as you listed. The tax transcript from the IRS includes all the information that appears on your tax slips and is a much smaller package (2-4 pages) than one where you have to send both a copy of what you filed, plus all the supporting documents. 

 

I was able to get my 2016 transcript a couple of weeks after filing electronically.

Ok so where do I start..... in a perfect world the chart posted above is a good general guideline.  However we are talking about the IRS here.  So anything can and will happen, especially if the one requesting the transcript has been a victim of identify theft in the past.  Trying to get transcripts on the website can also be very hit or miss.  SInce the website didn't work for your husband he should make a phone call and talk to a real person.  If he is close to an IRS office, visiting in person is another option and can be the fastest way to get the transcripts if available.  Hope it works out!

I filed March 11, received refund 4/5. Transcripts were available for 2016 same day on 4/5.  Ordered transcripts via mail and they arrived this past Monday, 4/10.

Thanks! we are both not in the States, so going to an office is not an option, but giving thema call is a good idea.

Thanks, hopefully the transcript will be available this week. If not, we probably still have about 2 weeks until we can send our package to the NVC

We're on the same timeline  we're waiting on his police certificate which should be arriving this week!  Are you going to send with signature required?

Yeah pretty much! I am also waiting for my police certificate from Germany where I lived for 3 years, then I am getting one from Estonia (but since it's such a small country, it takes about 2 days to get, so I haven't got it yet :D) What do you mean by "going to send with signature required?"

Wondering if I should FedEx the pack to the NVC with signature required but I can't make up my mind lol

OOOH yes. Yes I will. More expensive, but it will give me peace of mind when I know it is there safe and sound and won't take ages (since I have to send it from Europe).!!
