President Donald Trump told the New York Post on Tuesday that he had never met top political strategist Steve Bannon before Bannon came on to work on his presidential campaign last year.

“I like Steve, but you have to remember he was not involved in my campaign until very late,” Trump said. “I had already beaten all the senators and all the governors, and I didn’t know Steve. I’m my own strategist and it wasn’t like I was going to change strategies because I was facing crooked Hillary.”

However, PolitiFact has found that Trump’s claim to have not known Bannon until last year is completely at odds with what he said when he first announced he was bringing Bannon and top adviser Kellyanne Conway on board to run his campaign.

“I have known Steve and Kellyanne both for many years,”‘ Trump said at the time. “They are extremely capable, highly qualified people who love to win and know how to win.”

Additionally, PolitiFact points to a report from Real Clear Politics’ Rebecca Berg that claims Trump first met Bannon in 2011, while also noting that Trump appeared on Bannon’s talk radio program at least nine different times before Bannon came aboard as his campaign manager.

Just because Trump said it in the past, doesn't make it fact. Even when he is talking about his own life, he can't seem to get it straight.

I think at this point the most consistent source of fake news is Donald Trump.

If there was a particular reason why him getting how long he's known SB completely accurate matters, I'd be glad to jump aboard this comedy.

Otherwise, meaningless. Grill people on a witness stand and see how accurate they are at remembering who they've met and when. I don't expect much accuracy from humans. Apparently the left have some kind of superhuman memory or they meet so few people they can write the date for you on when they met X person.

There isn't a single person I  know who I would be off by YEARS if you asked me when I met them. Months? Maybe. Not by years.

If you call that superhuman memory, your bar is set very low.

Yes there is: we expect truthfulness from our leaders...is that reason enough?

I would if you've met even a fraction of the people Trump has.

What proof do you have that Trump was being dishonest?

Trump has said in one instance that he met him years ago, and in another instance that he met him just last year. (EDIT: I should add that those two statements were made months apart)

At one of those two points in time he was being dishonest because they are two statements that cannot be simultaneously true.

What proof do you have? A person can do their best to remember events, as is often seen when testifying on a witness stand, and it's extremely common for people to screw up dates, years, numbers, mix up people, etc. The more people one meets, the more they screw it up. The older they are, the more they screw it up. ####### happens.

Being dishonest is an intent. And while I wouldn't buy it if Trump said he mixed up the nuke codes with gate codes, when we're talking about how long he's known one person.. unless there's some relevance to this, as to why he must remember how long he's known Bannon.. this is just like every other petty and contrived attack and to be mocked/made fun of.

Ah yes, you are then right. He may not be dishonest in this instance. He could also just not remember.

If that is the case then, he doesn't have a very good memory. As I said, I think it is quite reasonable to be able to at least narrow when you met someone down to a year, especially for people you have met in the last 10 years. That isn't superhuman memory, that is just normal I think.

when trump brought bannon aboard his campaign he stated he'd known him (and kellyanne) for years. good people.

when trump wants to distance himself from bannon, he just met him. (where is kellyanne?)

He appeared on Steve Bannon's radio show > than nine times.   So is his memory that bad or just conveniently selective to the story he wants to tell?    The case above is one example.
