To "request an update" online or not

Opinions wanted please. 

 

April 12th marks the 1st day past the 6 months "last touched/updated" date on my husband's AOS. He will be using his AP to travel back home for several weeks (leaving mid-May). Would you:

a) Request the update and hope something happens before he leaves?

b) Wait to request an update until he comes home in early June?

 

Choosing a) we hope that he gets an interview waiver and maybe they just process his card and mail it to us. Having a GC to travel is so much less stressful than the AP.  But this also carries the fear that maybe they might schedule him for an interview while he is gone.

Choosing b) Is just a more conservative approach 

 

I am leaning towards b).

Honestly if you're at the 6 month mark for San Antonio then you may be in for a long wait. San Antonio almost ALWAYS has at least 9 months to a little over a year wait. Right now it's showing they're processing I-485 applications from MAY 2016.
 It's more than likely you won't have an interview waiver at this point.

If your husband can fly back into the US the second you tell him then go ahead and do it now but, I would personally wait until AFTER he's back, just to be on the safe side.

Yep - fully aware of the current timeline. As far as the possibility for a waiver being passed however,  this is not true. 

 

And while he *could* fly back, we prefer he not need to.

The possibility never passes, but there is a point where it's more likely than not that there will be an interview and usually that's within the first 6 months, I think almost everyone that applied in my same month that had their interview waived had it waived within 4-4 1/2 months (or earlier) with maybe one or two that got it in the 6th month, all the rest had interviews.. But again, that doesn't mean it's impossible to get an interview waiver, it just means to start planning for an interview.

Times they are a changing. But also, anecdotal evidence does not convince me of anything. Show me the statistical analyses of groups with a large n instead. I'd do it myself but working full time while trying to finish my PhD leaves me a bit strapped. 

 

We are also not worried about "planning" for the interview. We have always expected an interview and the preparations for this began long before we even got married, and continues to be an ongoing process. Our ducks are all in a row. I am just looking to see who thinks we should press for an update now and who thinks (as I do) that we should wait.

Personally, I'd wait until he returns just to make it more cost effective and less stressful all around.

 

You CAN go to infopass and ask the officer you meet with where the AOS file is.  That's what I did (I made a stupid mistake on my paperwork and didn't know whether to notify NBC or the local office) and the officer told me the case was still at NBC and flagged for an interview waiver. 

 

Either way, as you already know, anything to do with this process is a test of patience.  You don't seem to be wanting to push for it to just be done, so just wait it out until he's back.  Who knows, maybe you'll receive it via mail before he gets back :-)

Thank you! I didn't realize they could tell you if it has a waiver flag or not, this is good to know! We are definitely more chill about the green card than most I think. It will be great when he has it, but he has everything he needs otherwise. Plus, he cannot apply for citizenship ever anyway (unless he wants to renounce his Indonesian citizenship), so rushing things makes no sense. And there have been so many uplifting stories from people traveling safely with the AP that his trip should be problem free *fingers crossed*.

Woohoo!!! Awesome!!!  That's exciting :-) 

 

The approval feels even better when it comes unexpectedly :-)
