Hi there,

I got my SSN during the first few weeks of my residence in the US in November and I just received my EAD in the mail. I'm looking to work ASAP. How do I go ahead with "updating" my SSN card? Obviously it says something on the card about how my SSN can't be used to work.....Do I actually need to go to the SSN office to show them my EAD and have a new SSN card made? A step by step on what to do/bring when I go to the SSN office would be great...if I need to go there at all.

Thank you,

Mike

Are you changing your name? If not, there's no need to change till you get your GC to get the "limitation" line removed from the current SSN. If you need to get your SSN updated due to name change then bring your current SSN card and marriage certificate.

For my I-129F, K-1, AOS, EAD, AP and ROC detailed timelines, please refer to my timeline page :)

ROC filed on December 1, 2020, assigned to SRC, approved within 106 days on February 18, 2021.

My sincerest gratitude to all VJers, especially the late geowrian.

I disagree. It's important if you're applying for anything that will run a credit check, and even with E-Verify, that your SSN reflects that you are a "Legal Alien Allowed To Work" - this is one of the tick boxes on the form SS-5. This caused me all kinds of grief until I worked out that it was something I needed to do. Fortunately, it didn't stop me from getting work, but I can see the possibility of an employer giving up if they encounter any hurdles with their eligibility check. We want to remove as many barriers as possible, not make more!
