Nappy is a derogatory word.

I fail to see that as a derogatory word.

It is only a discription of a texture, i dont see how the texture of someones head or in this instance their hair is derogatory ,unless they are not happy with the way their hair is and they find the description offensive.

I believe there are many other races, ethnicitys that have "NAPPYHEADS"

so i dont see the race card here unless he has history of making racist remarks.

I can understand the "HO" part but the "NAPPYHEADED" part has me confused.

Being called a "HO" or in proper english "#######" is derogatory,Yes but its not a racist comment either.

Calling a Black person "nappy-headed" would be like calling an Asian person "slanty-eyed". While a physical descriptor, it has negative connotations associated with it.

Nappy is a derogatory word?

(presuming you meant it as a question), I guess since Lisa Nowak's Houston-Orlando drive.

If I had meant it as a question I would have put a question mark. It was a statement.

Then,

In UK, the word is used commonly--in North America, the equivalent is "diaper".

(and last-I-checked, Brit-glish ISN't widely understood by Yanks or Canucks).

Nappy is a derogatory word when used in the context in which Imus used it. I don't think you understand the meaning.

Conceded -- as I don't listen to Imus anyway

Hint: He wasn't implying that the Rutgers women's bball team wear diapers on their heads.

Also to concede--this particular IS derogatory.

hmmmmmmmmmm,

Well I'm African American and "Nappy" "Nappy head" and like terms are offensive to me and many others that I have talked to about these comments. It's not as simple as your definition above, and it IS quite often used in a deragatory and belittling manner. It is not simply a description such as curly, staright, wavy, in this case the terms are more likely, natural, kinky, coarse.....

First, let me state unequivocally that Imus' remarks are disgusting and unconscionable. However, I wonder if the same outrage is felt when other races make similar bigoted/racist/misogynist/what-have-you remarks. If not, why? Is the rule that if you or your friends/family/distant relatives/ancestors have ever experienced any form of bigotry real or imagined, that you get a pass?

I agree with everything you said.

I also find it VERY hypocrytical to see someone like Jesse Jackson, out there, leading protests today , and acting all indignant about what Imus said................when how quickly everyone forgets that several years back, he made a very similar kind of comment that was very derogatory towards Jewish people in New York, and referred to a part of the city as "Hymie Town".

Now he has the hypocrisy to be out there asking for Imus to be fired. If Imus should be fired............................then Jackson should step down from his position at the Rainbow Coalition.

And jerks like Charles Barkley, who go around saying stupid things like "That's why I hate white people".................should be fired from TNT as well.
