preach. i do believe that when we're old and grey looking back on why the younger generations can't seem to tell fact from fiction, we'll find that the lack of pouring through encyclopedias and searching catalog cards, pulling books to skim only to find they don't have exactly the info you need, etc etc, will have a lot to do with it..

Husband had a kid the other day who didn't know what 'transferable skills' were, didn't know how to use a library, and... also didn't know what an LP was. It scares me sometimes..

political slant? pbs has a slant toward truth, as does npr. not surprised trump supporters are weary of such 'bias' toward fact.

The very fact that the most left ditch poster in the history of Chest, thinks its the truth,  Val_idates  without question the slant argument. Time to fold the tents and go to the house.

Also back in the day we had one or two Network channels from the antenna  and PBS. It was a needed alternative. Do we really need to spend govt money on it now

Is "Validates" a curse word? Why did you put an _ in the middle? Were you trying to make it look like a weird face? l_i kind of looks like a guy with one wide eye and one squinting eye.

But we have wikipedia!

EDIT:

Seriously though I think there are benefits to both. I loved my encyclopedias, and I loved the "hunt" for information. However, my encyclopedia never led me down an hours long path learning about something completely unrelated to what I originally searched for because I clicked through one too many hyperlinks and I got too curious.

The switch for paper to internet is incredibly powerful. With it comes a lot of potential positives, but also a lot of potential negatives. "With great power comes great responsibility"

this is true, but, because compiling information was so painstaking (in comparison) i think that my generation is probably the last to truly have a grip on weeding through large amounts of data in paper form - since this is pretty much completed for us now with a simple google search.

there's something significant, for me anyway, about paper. i can't really write creatively using a keyboard, it has to be on paper..i have a hard time getting into books on my phone - there's something about having a book in hand. dunno. i'm an old.

Completely agree. I kill a lot of trees because every article I read I need to print out and read it on paper. I can't read it on the computer screen. I also haven't taken to the "electronic novel" craze. I need to buy books as well (I love hardcover and if I had the money I would be a book collector). If I wrote fiction/non-fiction I would probably do best on paper as well. Writing scientific research though is so much easier on a computer.

I think the biggest thing that children today have lost is patience and perserverance. Everything is on our fingertips and so it is easy to assume that the "truth" or the "right answer" can be obtained in mere seconds. If it takes any longer than that, it isn't worth doing.

It's why websites care so much whether they are at the "top of the list" on google searches etc... Most people will only look there. Just because something is the "most clicked" or "top of the list" doesn't mean it is the right source, but it is an "easier" source.

it really has nothing to do with what i think. i fact check most everything i read or watch - i don't take anything at face value. if i read an article on breitbart - it might be competely true, but i'll need to verify that before i buy it hook line and sinker. same goes for slate or huffpo or, npr. i've never thought of pbs as having a political slant though, unless valuing public education is a left slant - then, ok. big whoop.

eta, thank you nb for the most high honor of being dubbed most left ditch poster in the history of cehst.

I don't think I'd have ever learned how to read if I didn't have access to encyclopedias. And yes, the internet is an incredible tool which people really need to use to read and research, but nothing to me beats the old fashioned way of quietly exploring books. It helps hone the ability to focus instead of being bombarded with unverified unsourced 'facts', 'pseudo-facts' and other information. These days kids type everything and use spellcheck (you should see the poorly typed medical reports my sister gets handed at the office), copy and paste... the old generation did stuff the old fashioned way.

What educational alternative do you believe current network (no pay) channels offer to children these days... and adults for that matter?

Need to spend taxpayer money on everything the left likes now: abortions, leftist media, coddling people who break laws, etc.

I don't know many (any?) people on any side of the political specturm that "likes abortions".

What "the left" likes is making sure women have safe, reliable and easy ACCESS to them when they have made the decision to undergo one. They believe it is the woman's right to choose to undergo one, and I'm sure every single woman who does do it doesn't "like" to do it either. In my time in adolescent clinics I never encountered a woman, or another doctor, who was excited that they were being referred/were referring to a clinic to have an abortion done. We don't celebrate with a pizza party or something.

"The left" doesn't want to go back to the early 20th century when women were resorting to wire hangers or underground clinics where they didn't have access to reliable medication attention.

As for the topic of PBS/NPR -

Similar to Planned Parenthood, when there are issues with how a government funded organization conducts their business there should be change. The solution shouldn't just be "throwing it out". That is a very basic, uneducated and childish response to a problem. When a toddler can't fit a triangle shaped toy into a circular hole they can get frustrated and throw the triangle to the floor. The proper response would be to try to fit the triangle elsewhere, or try to find a circle.
