I 130 form will not let me type important info!

Hi everyone, just like everyone else here I am trying to fill out my paperwork as crystal clear and clean as possible to ensure that the government accepts the visa paperwork I'm filing without any problems or RFE. 

 

The visa I am filing for is a CR-1 visa to bring my wife from Argentina into the USA and the problems I am experiencing are as follows,

 

1. The electronic form I-130 will not let me type information into all of the areas that I really need to. For example, at part 2, 14b. on page 2, I'm asked to fill in the number of my old apartment. However, Adobe Reader and Preview will only allow me to put an "X" in the box labeled "Apt." and will not let me fill in the actual apartment number. Likewise, this happens with many other fields in the form, (Eg. Part 5, 2a.-5. on page 8) I am asked to fill in information about myself, but the form doesn't even allow me to type my name into the blank boxes.

I have also tried disabling Javascript in Reader already.

 

If it weren't for the problems I am currently experiencing, I would have already sent in our petition for the visa, so as you all can assume this is rather frustrating to us. 

 

If anyone has any advice or answers to this problem whether you have experienced it yourself or not, it would be MUCH appreciated!

in the case of the example you gave, that is correct, you have to chose one of the three, and the put the number and letter on the empty box on the right

 

you mark with an X, whether it is an apartment, suite or floor number and letter

 

so that one is correct if you are trying to put your apartment number

Yes I'm trying put my aparment number but the problem is that I cannot type anything in the blank box to the right

If there is no fix, then print out the form and manually add the apartment number in a legible manner. I think that it is a waste of time trying to figure this out.

Probably a browser issue. Have you tried saving the pdf and using adobe to fill out?  Using Adobe also allows you to save intermittently and work from a draft.

In these forms you can always print and write in CAPITAL letters using black ink. It is acceptable.

Yes I've been working on Adobe Reader and i've also tried using Chrome and Safari, probably not even worth trying Mozilla if I'm already experiencing problems with three different applications. I think I'm just going to have to write it in like the others have told me

I-130 doesn't REQUIRE capital letters, just typed or printed in blank ink.

I recommend saving the form offline and using acrobat reader.  Don't try to fill it out in the browser.  Also Apple's preview has trouble with some fillable forms specifically designed for Adobe.

This is a very old topic and I hope the OP no longer needs help but I had the same problem.  I also encountered the same issue in other fields on this document.  I'm posting here just to help others who may encounter this issue.

 

Here was my solution (requires Acrobat Pro/DC or some other program able to edit document fields.  Reader will NOT work).

 

1. Open the form
2. On the right hand side should be a menu bar
3. Select "more Tools"
4. In the options presented, select "prepare form"
5. this will bring you back to the form
6. Scroll down to the field you are unable to enter data into
7. double click the field
8. Under the General tab, look for the "Common Properties" section
9. Inside the Common Properties section there is a "Read only" check box
10. uncheck the box
11. hit ok
12. repeat steps 6 through 11 as often as needed
13. save document and then re-open and you can now type in the field.

 

Why this is even an issue five years later is beyond me.

Why not try downloading the form, save it, then open it with Adobe Reader without typing in a browser.  Sounds like a browser issue.  The form works fine when opened directly with Adobe Reader.
