jobless claims post largest drop in almost two years

New applications for U.S. unemployment benefits recorded their biggest drop in nearly two years last week, pointing to a further tightening in the labor market.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits declined 25,000 to a seasonally adjusted 234,000 for the week ended April 1, the Labor Department said on Thursday. The drop was the largest since the week ending April 25, 2015, and unwound recent increases that had lifted claims to a three-month high.

"The lower jobless claims filings show the economy continues to show improvement which is important news with the long expansion expected to eventually tire somewhere down the line given its longevity," said Chris Rupkey, chief economist at MUFG Union Bank in New York.

Claims have now been below 300,000, a threshold associated with a healthy labor market, for 109 straight weeks. That is the longest such stretch since 1970, when the labor market was smaller. The labor market is currently near full employment.

Nonfarm payrolls miss - http://www.cnbc.com/2017/04/07/march-nonfarm-payrolls.html

At this point it's all kind of wishy washy. Employment is a lagging indicator anyway. It's kind of like anticipating what the car in front of you will do by looking in the rear view mirror, not very informative.

And there always lurks the fuzzy variable of "who got jobs" vs. "who gave up looking for jobs."

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Well for that you have the U6, which is also by the government but is supposed to account for that; It's just not as commonly reported.

For those looking to take it even further, you have shadowstats:

Not only that, but we've seen under Bush and Obama how useless job numbers are. Mostly service sector in all likelihood. I will be happy when the trends say otherwise.

Yeah, I wouldn't hold my breath. Over here we can see it very well. Seems like virtually everyone's hiring, surprised unemployment is at 2.1% and not 0%. I mean literally, I swear most places don't even bother taking their hiring signs down, ever. Same sign we've been seeing for the last 3 years.

Problem is...they're all retail/service. Nothing high paying. Really easy here to get a job if you just need to get a job. Alot harder if you need a GOOD job to raise a family.

Some places are required to advertise that they're hiring even when they're not, it's company policy to do so mostly in unionized situations.

The addage of "McDonald's is always hiring" isn't necessarily true.  I managed a McDonald's that was fairly large that hired maybe 4x in two years.

Yeah. If we moved back to the states I almost considered going back to the Bay Area just to save up money and move+invest elsewhere (like South Dakota). Already a long shot for sure since we're already starting to do well again after the economy took a dump over the last few years in Alberta. As long as the Liberals and NDP up here don't do too much damage economically and with their recent Islamo-coddling behavior I won't need to take the step toward making that happen.

How many touch screens were hired?
