I want to share my experience traveling with the NOA letter.

My 2-year green card expired 07/2017 and my NOA was dated 04/11/2018. I thought the extension is from 07/2017 - 07/2018.

This Monday, I came back from a short trip, in JFK, I was being yelled at that my “extension has expired” because the letter was dated 04/11/2017, and the extension is based on that date.

Luckily my case was approved while I was traveling, and I had my husband scan the approval letter and emailed it to me, AND I PRINTED IT OUT AND BRING IT WITB ME.

I was taken to the “small room” for them to check for my status, and was able to be cleared and go home to my husband.

But I know lots people say that the extension should be based on the green card. And the NOA letter was not clear about it. I feel like it’s luck...depends on the officer who checks your docs at the airport.

Anyways, really, don’t travel without your documents that’s definitely valid in any way...

Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry you went through that!!! This is absolutely terrible! So glad that you were approved while away and managed to get it sorted, though.

I just travelled abroad on the letter too, and entered the country same circumstance as you in late April (over a year passed the date of the extension letter). And no approval yet for me. And thankfully I did not have any such issues at immigration at SFO (San Francisco).
To be on the safe side, I did have the following document downloaded and saved onto my phone. I would advise anyone traveling to do the same (or print it- even better).

It very explicitly states that the extension is from the date on the green card, and not the letter itself.
The relevant page is 38.

Reminds me of how very bad (impatient, stern, abrupt, discourteous, and mean) the CBP officers can be at an airport.  I have seen them brow beating a woman because she apparently had not been respectful to the CBP officers at Miami International.  An officer walked by a teen in the small room and shouted that if he did not put away his cell phone it would be confiscated.  We returned last summer with our I-797 extension notice, and the CBP officer at the booth did not seem to know what the I-797 was, so we we escorted to that small room (where we saw the woman being brow beat the year prior).  Not a good feeling.  Thankfully, a knowledgeable officer in the smaller room glanced at the I-797 and let us proceed.  I can totally understand CBP officers seeing the receipt date on the I-797 and incorrectly thinking the notice date equates to the extension date.

Omg  I was trying to see if any news about delays on green cards can’t find any. This is stressful I need  to renew my license 😥

Hmm, my license is still good till 2019. They didn't link it to my GC date luckily. When does it expire? Hopefully you get it in time, my letter said that if I don't get it within 60 days I need to contact them.

Hi all,

Sorry, late to the party but wanted to provide info on my wife’s case.

I-751

Received at VSC: 4/19/2017

Biometrics: 6/7/2017

Case Approved: 4/20/2018

So approved in exactly 12 months and 1 day. Her green card expired 7/12/2017.

We got the same “case transferred to local office” at the end of February and on April 9th. We moved and filed a change of address on 12/29/2017

I assume based that you are in New York, you are a Vermont filer?

Most of the CSc filers r applying n400 and thy r receiving notices for gc case transfer just for combine the n400 and gc processing...this may benefit to those who r not applying n400 bcz most of the work load is transferring now...may lead to less gc cases behind...!

I wouldnt get your hopes up on that. I like to think I have a more realistic approach and they will take the opportunity to take even longer on those cases since they dont need to be worked on for as long as you have that I-551 stamp.
