There are people who send a ton of evidence and they still get an RFE. No one is imune to RFEs. From what I’ve seen here most cases are approved after you respond to an RFE. I just read on another thread that someone got an RFE and he was approved just two weeks later after sending the documents. Just make sure to send all documents they’re asking for in the letter and you will be fine 🙂

With the calendar turning over to April, us April 2017 CSC filers now face the decision whether to proceed with filing the N400 application to be processed simultaneously with our pending i751 applications. Based on my research, much of it from this very good thread on n-400 & i-751 combo on VJ, it looks like a good move for California Service Center filers who are currently facing long i-751 pendency times.

Processing times for the combo filing looks to be usually around 3 months for many local offices. There is not enough data to make solid assumptions about any local office, although anecdotally it would appear the Seattle office is backed up and requires 6 months of extra waiting, or more. But again, based on my research, the following steps seem to be taken by the various authorities:

1. The N-400 is forwarded to the local office.

2. New biometrics appt

3. The local office sets an interview date approximately 3 months from the filing date.

4. At some point, the local office requests the i-751 app from CSC, and at a later point receives i-751 for co-processing

5. After the N-400 interview, the local office approves N-400 and i-751 simultaneously.

I checked my local office and it 13 to 20.5 months to process the N-400.  I think people should look at their local office to see what times they are having when making that choice.

I think we are going to wait it a few more months and than proceed for us.

I applied for my N-400 on March 27th, as soon as I became eligible. I did my biometrics yesterday, and am now in the the waiting period. The online portal tells me I have to wait approximately till March 2019 for my case to be approved. So I'm definitely not getting my hopes up for it to be concluded in 3 months.

But because of the long wait times, I think the decision to apply for n-400 was right for me, since ROC ought to be approved by the time they get to my n-400. And since n-400 is taking so long, might as well get the wait started.

I wouldn't base my decision on the N-400 processing times that you're seeing on the USCIS site. Here are 6 examples (all with previously filed i-751's mostly from CSC) from the combo thread:

Soapface (VJ mem ID) Omaha (local office) Est proc time for N-400 for local office: 9 to 15.5 months

Filed 1/11/18  Interview 4/3/18  (oath ceremony usually occurs about 4-6 weeks after interview)

Bill&Katya - Detroit - 9 to 14.5 months

Filed 1/13/18  Interview 4/10/18

Nikkosan - Oakland Park FLA - 14.5 to 22 months

Filed 11/2/17  Interview 3/12/18

Jebee - Denver - 12.5 to 19 months

Filed 10/23/17  Interview 2/14/18

Qan17 - Santa Ana CA - 10.5 to 14.5 months

Filed 12/31/17  Interview 3/15/18

Ozgirl - Seattle - 12 to 15 months

Filed 9/15/17  Interview not scheduled yet

So, as you can see in 5 out of 6 cases involving 6 different local offices, the interviews were scheduled in about 3 months after filing, despite the long processing time that USCIS quotes at their website. Again, Seattle looks like they're having some issues.

We can confirm that our case was sent from the CSC to our local office.

We called USCIS in regards to getting a status check and info on how to go about getting a stamp after my husband extension expires in 2 Weeks. They confirmed his case was no longer at the CSC.

He is eligible to apply for the N400 on the 13th of April and we will apply online.

The new processing times are to be more accurate. I know someone that filed their N-400 last August and still no interview. So I do think you need to take in consideration the processing times and check with others around you for their timelines.

Wow thank you very much for taking the time to gather that information. Much appreciated! I thought my N400 application was going to take another year to be completed. Still debating if I should apply now or wait for ROC. I'll become eligible next week.

Let me give my two cents concerning N-400 applications while the ROC is pending. I spoke to an attorney and she categorically recommended applying for N-400 as soon you become eligible (if becoming a citizen is indeed something you are interested in). Especially, since applying online is so easy and you do not need to submit a ton of documents with your N-400 since you are going to have an interview regardless (so bring all the additional stuff to said interview.)

At least in our local office (Boston), the processing times are very fast (about 3-4 months for an N-400), so you are very likely to get your citizenship even before your ROC is decided. Given the way the immigration winds are blowing, I just feel much better having the citizenship as soon as possible.

Well, they don't look too accurate based upon my research. If you're independently filing an N-400, for example based on the 5 yr rule, then yes, maybe they are more accurate. The data above reflects combo i-751 & N-400 cases.
