Hello,

I applied for my Social Security on feb 6th in Charlotte,NC. They said my last name was too long(22 characters). The letter said 4 weeks because they had to mail my documents and it needed to be manually verified. Everytime I call them they say that homeland security hasnt verified my application and its gonna take 2 more weeks. Its been 8 weeks now. I checked the Save case check using I94 number, I dont see any cases. I am on my OPT. Can I do anything which would help me get my Social faster. I havent visited the office yet. Would that help?

Manual verification does take a long time. At this point you can only keep following up with them. The most ideal time to apply for a SSN is approximately 14 days after your entry into the US to ensure that your records have been updated onto the systems.

On the other hand, check your I-94 (https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/) to see if you can pull up your latest record. If you can't pull it up, there might have been a wrong input of your details and usually it happens to a person's name. If you need to get your details corrected, contact your deferred inspection site by locating the contact details here https://www.cbp.gov/contact/deferred-inspection/overview-deferred-inspection.

Hope that can help a little.

For my I-129F, K-1, AOS, EAD, AP and ROC detailed timelines, please refer to my timeline page :)

ROC filed on December 1, 2020, assigned to SRC, approved within 106 days on February 18, 2021.

My sincerest gratitude to all VJers, especially the late geowrian.

I entered the US on F1-Visa in 2015. I recently got my EAD and then applied for a SSN. I have checked the I-94 website and all the information is updated correctly. I think the only issue is with the manual verification.

Thanks for replying.

This information is a bit outdated. The recommendation is to go apply as soon as possible. With the electronic i-94 the information is updated in 1-2 days. Applying as soon as possible is important especially if it goes to manual verification since this now takes about 8-10 weeks. People that wait 2 weeks to apply can unfortunately run into problems getting a card issued while having 14 days left on i-94.

I still haven't received my social even after waiting for 10 weeks. When I call them they say it is still under verification. I am starting to worry a little bit now.

I have a job offer but they need my social to pass through the background verification. Please help.

You can ask the SSO staff to call the toll free USCIS number that they have to check up on if everything is ok with your case. That is about what you can do without involving a congressman or ombudsman.

I called my local SSO and requested them to call USCIS as u said, they said they cant do that, instead asked me to call and when I called USCIS they asked me for some case number to check my record. I gave them the reference number on the sheet and save verification number. The officer said I need to have some other number, In order to generate that number I had to call SSO and ask them to request or send(I forgot) a G845 form.
I think it is better to involve a congressman or ombudsman. If you can help me with the process, I would really appreciate it.
