Hey everyone,

 

I am currently adjusting from a K1 visa and am still waiting for my EAD. Now I signed up for some survey companies that sent me surveys in return of points that can be redeemed for money or gift cards. After I completed one of the surveys I realized that USCIS might consider this as working too because I get compensated for it. 

Am I Right? Can it be seen as me working without permission?

It's a gray area. I think it would probably be fine as you are not displacing a US worker. You taking surveys doesn't prevent somebody else from doing so. That said, if the payment is from a US company or to a US account, it may raise questions. Outside of immigration concerns, you still need to report the compensation for tax purposes.

I think to be on the safe side I will only take surveys for companies that offer rewards that you can redeem at an online store (for a handbag or sport dumbbells) or gift cards.

It says that only residents of the US or Canada can participate. I am not considered one yet?

At $600 from a single source, they are supposed to send you a 1099-MISC for you to report it. But at $400 (total) you are required to claim it.

Thank you, that's what I figured. I never kept on taking these surveys anyways. Seemed too much of a grey area to me :)
