Hi all,

My fiance will be coming next month after what seemed like a very very long wait..We have been lucky, things have gone well without any problems so far.

I was trying to get a sense of whats the process after she enters US...specifically , how soon we can get a court marriage done?

Does she need a SSN# to get married in california/Vegas? If so, then the guide on VJ says to wait atleast 2 weeks before aplying for a SSN#, right? How long does it take to get a SSN#?

Thanks,

Bav

You must get married within 90 days of arrival. Just check your state's government website to find out what you have to do to get married (blood test, how long it takes to get a license, if you need SSN, etc.). Google searches are very helpful.

I've seen people here recommend waiting 2 weeks before applying for a SSN so that they can find you in the system. I think it's only a matter of weeks for a SS number once you apply.

Whether you need a social security card for marriage or not depends on the state - if you plan to get one anyway - they say to wait 10 days to 2 weeks from when you come into the country so your information is entered into the computer. How long it takes - they say - is 2 to 4 weeks, some here on VJ got it sooner, some much later.

Check your state's marriage requirements.

My wife and I got married in Vegas just 2 days after she arrived to the U.S.No SSN was needed to obtain the marriage liscence. She arrived on Feb 12th.On the 13th we went to the courthouse, payed the $55,showed them her visa and passport and her birth certificate. In 15 minutes we had our liscence. We got married the following day on Valentines Day.But that was Las Vegas and they are fast.Other states I hear take up to 2 weeks.

As for the SSN.We went to the social security office and filled out the form that also can be downloaded, showed them her passport with the valid I94 that is attatched to it,and marriage certificate. She just recieved hers in only 1 week.

I hope this helps,good luck,

Scott

Check the marriage requirements according to your county in PA, because each county has different requirements. My fiance lives in Chester County and their website states that only one person needs the SSN in order to obtain the marriage license. They didn't even mention a driver's license.

Nini - Vancouver BC, Canada (she's the one who does the forum thing)

Hi, I'm in Los Angeles, and a marriage license can be obtained in one hour. The only identification your fiancee needs to show is some government type, like a passport. But in Los Angeles County, only the Downey office performs Civil Ceremonies Monday through Friday. Beverly Hills does Thursday, and the rest Friday only!!! So check. With the license, you can pay someone to officiate. Check the internet on that.

We are planning to go on the Monday she arrives in August to Van Nuys, get the license, then go to my church where my pastor will officially marry us in front of a few friends. Hopefully, we can use the chapel. Then we will take everyone to lunch (hopefully a quick one), and be on our way to the honeymoon in Santa Barbara.

All the best to you.

I was just checking out the state requirements online. Looks like Texas requires the SSN, but I checked out surrounding states...Arkansas seems to have almost no restrictions whatsoever. No waiting period, either! Thanks for that link.
