Long story short, my fiancé never got her original documents back after her interview!

She was asked to give originals, even though she had photocopies and had tried to get them to accept those instead- mostly because she feared she'd never see the originals again. Still, since they were so adamant about having the originals, we figured they'd mail them back along with her passport/visa (K-1). Unforuntatley, they didn't! The only original she really wants back is her birth certificate. She considered calling but is skeptical that they'd give her the information over the phone.

Has this happened to anyone out there or is this just some bad luck on our end? Any suggestions are super appreciated! Thanks in advance for any help :)

Well you need duplicates not photocopies, I think I got 6 when I started and had a couple left at the end.

They are supposed to give the documents back to you, and you shouldn't leave the building without doing so. Seeing as it's a bit late though, my suggestion would be to obtain some new copies from the UK government before entering the US. It'll make things a little less fussy than doing it abroad.

Back when I was applying for my K1, I was asked for my original birth certificate......I never saw it again!

I had to send off for a certified copy but the original was lost forever. It hasn't caused me any problems having a certified copy but to think I had the original for 30 odd years only for it to be lost by somebody else is annoying

Thanks for the feedback guys, I'll have to let her know certified is the best/only way to go now!

I'm sorry to hear you've also lost your original to them, but wanted to thank you for sharing your personal experience with the same situation!  At least a certified copy will work just as well :) I was hoping maybe they had forgotten to send it, and it'd show up sometime before she leaves...but I think that's just an overly optimistic thought

Not sure but a Form G-884 (request return of original docs) might be useful in this situation. Maybe somebody who has filed one can chime in

I'll have to do some research on that form, thank you for the suggestion! :) I really appreciate your help!

Incase anyone in the future stumbles across this thread and is looking for similar help- form G-884 seems to only work with USCIS! Still good info to know, but sadly it won't help in our case. For the U.K I did find this link for "Return of Documents" that involves U.K visas & immigration. I'm not sure if it'll work, but it was the most relevant thing I could find while searching around. I will edit this post in the future and say if she has any success using this link to get her originals back :)

That is a UK Home Office website. They do not have your documents because you were not applying for a visa to enter the UK. The US government has the documents, more specifically the Deptartment of State, Immigrant Visa Unit, London.

Have vet you contacted them using this form? https://uk.usembassy.gov/visas/visa-information-services/contact-us-immigrant-visas/u-s-embassy-london-visa-unit-contact-form/

Tick the next to last box as the reason so it gets routed to the IVU.

We definitely haven't used the form on the link you've sent- I just sent it to my fiancé (she's the U.K beneficiary), seeing as I'm sure she didn't get anywhere with the other form  I appreciate your help so much though, because we're both absolutely clueless with contacting them, as you probably could've guessed. Thank you!!
