Maybe the mohels in hospitals in NYC. In Israel, they usually do it in your home or a synagogue, and always give them alcohol. Seems to calm them down enough so while I'm sure it's painful, I am also sure there's many things more painful. The "mitzvah" of circumcision lies in the pain it causes actually, so they don't often use anaesthetic or sedation. Usually a drop of wine does the trick.

Do they suck it in Israel? Honest question. My friend is Jewish and he said that used to part of traditional practice but he knew no one in the New York area that condoned it. Some use "suction" devices though.

Some do. The Talmud actually writes that a "Mohel who does not suck, creates a danger and should be dismissed from practice". Rashi on that Talmudic passage explains that this step is in order to draw some blood from deep inside the wound to prevent danger to the baby. There are other modern antiseptic and antibiotic techniques all used as part of the brit milah today which many say accomplish the intended purpose of metzizah(sucking), however, since metzitzah is one of the four steps to fulfill Mitzvah, it's still practiced by many Orthodox and Hassidic Jews.

Interesting. Thanks for the education :)

We can continue to go about our normal daily lives, choosing to snip of bits off our sons without asking them. At the end of the day I should add that I plan on doing it to my son (as I was). Again, I accept that it is a little incongruous with my doubts over the procedure but I am equally victim to the situation as other people. It's how I am and that has a powerful impact on my decision. I don't actually know what my wife wants since circumcision is very uncommon in the UK but she seems to have gotten used to it ;)

i still don't think the two are comparable. if circumcision removed the potential for orgasm i don't think it would have ever caught on in the states as a safety precaution..do you?

i don't even understand how fgm could be considered 'elective plastic surgery'.

SOmething I completely agree with you on..... Are pigs flying yet?

While there's still raging debate over male circumcision, what's the debate about female? It's only ever been done to restrict a female's enjoyment of sex.. and pretty much exclusively for religious reasons. While I respect the rights of people to be heinous in their own piece of land, in their own culture, I can't see how this reflects western values.

I don't dispute that it is a horrific act. But it's done based on religious reasons. That's the problem with America you know; claiming to be the land of the free. Freedom of religion means freedom of religion, and it doesn't have to 'reflect western values'. Religion clashes with 'values' all the time in America, within a variety of religious sects (not just Muslim ones either).

It is interesting because my brother and his wife did not circumcise their son, my parents weren't too happy at first but it's their choice. My wife and I as I've mentioned agreed to do it in a hospital by a medical professional and not a mohel. My sister had it both times in her house with a mohel. So you have all 3 options in one family, as usual I'm in the middle lol
